Broken Silence
Prologue
One year. It had been one year since Ema disappeared. One year, eighteen days, five hours, forty-seven minutes, and thirty-two seconds, to be exact.
It was nearing midnight and the only sound that could be heard was the soft clinking of ice as a stiff drink was being poured. Silence was the only constant thing in the Asahina household since Ema had vanished. No one knew what happened, where Ema was, or if she was even still alive. Her absence was felt quite heavily. All the brothers blamed themselves in one way or another. The 'what ifs' and 'I should have been theres' were thoughts that had crossed all of their minds at one point or another. Now, more than a year later, it was on a rainy Fall night that five of the Asahina brothers sat together in the stillness, deeply mourning their missing sister.
Finally, as the sadness seemed to seep from every corner, Hikaru broke the painful silence. "It's her birthday tomorrow," he said softly. "She'll be nineteen."
Louis hummed gently as he stroked a depressed Juli on his lap. "We should celebrate it," he said tenderly. "Chii would like that."
"I'm not sure that's such a good idea," Kaname replied. "It would really upset Wataru."
"Yeah," Masaomi agreed. "Any mention of her and he can't stop crying."
"It might do him some good, though," Ukyo said, thoughtfully. "We all miss her, but we hardly talk about her. Wataru hasn't dealt with her disappearance – none of us have, really. That's why it's so hard on him; we don't talk about it. Maybe that's why we should celebrate it."
Silence fell again before Kaname let out a defeated sigh. "You're right. Look at us! None of us can even say her name…" The atmosphere was thick with emotion as the gathered brothers all exchanged meaningful looks. For a while, the only thing that could be heard was the clock as it ticked. One minute left until midnight.
"All right," Masaomi concluded. "It's settled, then. Tomorrow night, after dinner, we'll celebrate Ema's nineteenth birthday."
Little did they know, that celebration would never happen.
A/N: Hey guys! So, this is the first Brothers Conflict fic I've ever done, so try not to be too harsh with your criticisms. I've been rewatching the anime lately and I was just dying to write this story that wouldn't leave my brain.
Updates will be slow, unfortunately. I'm sorry, I know that sucks, but I do currently work 3 jobs and I'm trying to write my own novel as well, so sometimes my fanfics have to take a backseat. Speaking of my fanfics, I know some of you are eagerly waiting for me to update some of my other stories and I pray you forgive me! I feel awful that it's been so long since I've updated any of them, but like I've said, life had been busy.
Anyway, I hope to hear from you all soon, my lovelies!
XOXO
