Lily couldn't recall ever seeing James this mad. His hazel eyes glinted dangerously, they glowed in the fire with unconditional anger. His rambunctious black hair paraded around his head in a vicious stampede. Her breath caught when he stepped up to her.
"I. Cannot. Believe. You." He breathed. Her eyes widened innocently but to no avail. Sweet Merlin, he was angry.
"I-"
"You –"
"James please-" She stepped forward, her warm fingers clutching his arm desperately.
"No, the one day of the year I asked you to please be there, for me, your boyfriend, and you didn't even show!" He yelled.
"I couldn't, I—"
"Lily, I needed you. I need you." He pleaded, his anger melting into a kind of hurt. The fire in his eyes disappeared, only to be replaced by a betrayed hurt. He looked like a puppy dog when he was sad and it made her curse herself. She sighed.
"James, I'm so sorry. I honestly meant to make it, honestly, but I…well…" She blushed a delicate shade of deep crimson. He stared at her beseechingly.
"What?"
"I didn't want to show you yet but I guess considering the circumstances…" She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small piece of fabric. She tapped it with her wand and it grew, stretched until it was several feet long. In glittering flashy words it read:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAMES!
LOVE, YOUR LILY
Underneath the words there was a photo of them asleep on the couch in their dorm. Lily was curled into his side and his head rested lightly on top of her fire hair which swirled with every soft breath she took. They wore identical smiles in their sleep and were covered with a thick red and gold blanket.
"Oh..." He breathed, touching the lettering softly.
"I stayed up until one last night getting the charm right and I fell asleep finishing it this morning…" She explained. He was still staring at the flashing letters and looked slightly guilty.
"You know what? It doesn't matter. My parents can meet you when you come over this break." He said grinning. She grinned back and he kissed her. His arms wrapped tightly around her waiste, deepening the kiss until they fell back onto the bed.
"OI!" A sleeping Sirius screamed. The couple broke apart, jumping up only to look down upon a very disgruntled Sirius. Lily and James glanced at each other and burst out laughing, so hard that they were on the ground clutching their sides. Sirius got up and sidled out the door muttering incoherently about horny best mates snogging in other peoples rooms. But Lily could've sworn that as Sirius left he flashed James a thumbs up and everything was once again okay. Better than okay, Lily mused as she crawled over to her laughing boyfriend and claimed his lips once more.
