Chapter 1 - Waiting for Death
Hermione hadn't eaten anything at the feast. Neither had she said a thing to her friends. They were too happy for her to ruin the beginning of their final year at Hogwarts. Voldemort was destroyed, and everyone's lives were perfect once more. But Hermione's wasn't. She had nothing left. But even with everything lost, she knew she had to keep living.
Hermione braved the staircase up to the heads' common room.
'Malfoy', she muttered as she stared down at her bandaged wrists.
~
Draco felt her shadow hang over him. He didn't want to face her. At least not tonight. But he had to. He had no other choice but to look up at the girl whose parents were now dead because of his father.
Before he had looked up though, Hermione tossed aside the table and pushed Draco back against the wall, breaking the chair. Getting up, Draco was pushed down again. He'd surely broken his arm. Hermione held him down by his shoulders, and quickly her hands grabbed his neck and strangled him.
Draco couldn't fight her off. He was yelling in pain trying to pull her hands off his neck, but her grip just got tighter.
"I'll kill you... I'll kill you... I'll kill you... I'll kill you... I'll kill you..." Hermione kept whispering. "This is for my parents, Malfoy. I'll kill your father. I'll kill your mother. I'll kill your whole family. Because you have no right to live." Hermione's eyes were full of a rage that Draco didn't even see in his father. He knew she was too strong for him. Her grip tightened even more with each word she said.
Draco knew he'd be dead in just a few more seconds. He felt the pain in his neck, the blood struggling to reach his brain, and the air he so desperately needed fighting to squeeze itself through. He looked down at Hermione and with a weak smile he said, "I'll... miss you... Granger... Take care of... yourself". With that, Draco closed his eyes still smiling. This is what he wanted, wasn't it? Perfect freedom? He wanted death to sweep over him. No one loved him anyway. He'd been lonely for so long that this pain was nothing.
He waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Why wasn't he dead yet?
Then Draco felt Hermione's hands slip away from his neck and he started gasping for air.. His eyes were squeezed tight. He could hear her starting to sob into her robes. He blinked his eyes open and looked at her, his eyes only half-open.
Draco reached out to touch her but she pushed his hand away. "Don't touch me!" She wiped her face on the bandages around her wrists.
Hermione gathered herself up and ran to her dorm, slamming the door behind her.
Draco was exhausted. He sat regaining his breath, his gray eyes sill only half open. He felt his broken arm. "I'll miss you?," Draco asked himself, before letting go of his arm and falling asleep.
