Betrayal of the Worst Kind
Elijah stood on the porch of the Gilbert house. He felt betrayed, but he supposed it was only natural. After all, he was pretty sure he'd smelled Elena's blood in the champagne. That was why he was here. Taking a deep breath to center himself, he raised his hand and knocked exactly twice. It was Elena who answered the door, and she went whiter than a sheet when she saw him. He took this as a very bad sign.
He smiled grimly. "I have to talk to you, Elena. It's rather urgent. Are you alone?"
She nodded. "Come on in." she moved to let him in and shut the door behind him. "What is it?" She silently hoped she was wrong about why he'd come.
"Elena, would you care to share why I could smell your blood in the champagne? And please don't lie to me." He didn't sound angry, just betrayed. Her heart dropped into her stomach as she looked into his eyes. How was she supposed to respond to that? As she mentally pondered how to respond, he continued speaking. "What exactly did my mother say to you?"
Elena swallowed, blinking back tears. It was now, or never. "Your mother wanted to kill Klaus. But since he can't be killed, she used my blood to do a spell that linked you all together as one." She watched his eyes widen and forced herself to press on. She repeated Esther's words to her at the party. "So that if one dies, you all do."
The look on Elijah's face broke her heart. She'd never seen him look so betrayed. "Including Niklaus..." he whispered, and she nodded for confirmation. The smile that graced his face was sad. "Thank you for telling me this, Elena." Then it hardened into a bitter mask. "It's nice to see that you're still honourable as ever." The word honourable came out as a hiss and she flinched visibly as he turned to leave.
She grabbed his arm, crying freely now. "Elijah, please. I want to fix this. Let me help."
He shook her arm off and fixed her with a cold glare. "I think you've done enough, Elena." He looked right into her eyes. "It would be better if you just stayed away from us." With those words, he was gone. Elena sank to her knees, sobbing violently. Only now did she realize how truly stupid going along with Esther's plan had been. Not only had she betrayed the only Original that didn't want to rip her guts out, but she'd basically signed him up for slaughter. "I'm so sorry..." she whispered, as if he could hear her. Maybe he could. He was the only one who didn't deserve it, and now he was going to die with the rest of them. She wished there was a way she could go back in time and undo ever agreeing to it. But there wasn't.
