Pansy sighed… she could see the dazed look on Malfoy's face. She tried to divert his eyes, but they were clearly fixed on something else. Little did she know that that something else was Hermione, laughing brilliantly exposing her shining, white teeth. Pansy finally gave up. She slammed her book shut with unnecessary force and threw it in her bag.
"I'll seeya later, Draco." She walked down the hallway towards the common room. She turned once to look at him, but his eyes hadn't moved. Pansy wished more than anything for Malfoy to love her… and she had lied to herself for too long that he did. She pretended to shrug it off. 'Oh, well.' Hermione took a sip of her water and let her eyes glance around at the other students, enjoying their lunches. They all looked so carefree and happy… but she knew she looked like one of them. However, deep down inside she was hurting. Her stomach ached, her heart beat slowly, and her mind raced. Her eyes met Malfoy's, and for a moment she was still. Her face twisted in pain as he could tell what she was thinking about. Then she blinked and set her cup down, quickly gathering her books.
"Where are you going, Hermione?" Harry asked, noticing her hurry.
"Uh- I have potions homework. Completely forgot." This was a lie, of course; she never forgot to do homework. Hermione smiled a little before running off to the hallway. When she got into the hallway, she broke into a run. She sprinted past the Gryffindor common room and past the main staircase- she just wanted to be far away from the dining hall as possible.
"Hermione, wait!" Draco called out loudly behind her, not caring who heard. He was hurrying to keep up.
Hermione ran through a small hallway and hid in a broom closet, praying he wouldn't find her. Soon enough the door opened. Hermione had dropped her bag and was sitting in the corner, her face turned towards the wall. She was crying.
Malfoy dropped beside her and wrapped his big arms around her waist, pulling her close to his chest. She shed tears into his shirt, and he stroked her hair. "It's okay." He said, resting his head on top of hers. She looked up at him and tried to push away, but he was too strong, there was no point.
"No, Malfoy, it's NOT okay!" she screamed, wiping tears out of her eyes. "You can't keep coming after me like this! We can't be together, why can't you just accept that?" she balled her tiny hands into fists and beat at his chest as she spat the last word.
"Why should I have to? Hermione, I can't stop thinking about you- this is too painful." He let go. "I just don't know what to do."
"Draco… there's no question here. You and I both know what has to happen." she said in a quiet voice. "I'm sorry. We took this too far."
Malfoy let his mind wander now, thinking back to a happy memory, anything to diver his heart from the pain he felt now. He couldn't distract himself from the downright agony. Hermione stood up, and picked up her bag quickly. She opened the door to the closet and before she knew it, Malfoy had pulled her back into the closet and was kissing her. He felt her tears on her face, she felt nothing- nothing at all. He put his hands on her back and pushed her closer to him, and she laid her arms around his neck. After a minute, she pushed away. She wiped her eyes and said with a sad voice "I love you." before exiting the closet. Malfoy leaned his arms against the wall and cried out in pain- his heart was broken. There was nothing left of him.
