A drabble that appeared in my head out of the blue.
Inspired by a scene in one of three new Kingdom Hearts games, said scene being from Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days.
Remember
"I can't remember anything anymore."
A redhead turned away from his ice cream to stare, confused, at his companion. The silence between them had obviously been broken, but now he noticed just how odd it had really been: his friend had merely been stationary, allowing the frozen treat to drip and fall upon the cobblestone far below them. A weird air was enveloping the blonde, his body shrinking into his long black coat: one of the symbols of Organization XIII's members.
"Sure you can, Roxas," the redhead smiled, "You remember me, don't you? And Naminé?"
Roxas shook his head and looked up, cerulean eyes glimmering sadly in the light of the setting sun. "Not like that." A pause before, "Axel, I used to have his memories. It was all I dreamed about. Atlantica, for example, and Halloweentown and Agrabah and Destiny Islands… But now, everything's just gone."
Axel scratched at his face a tad, a finger going over one of the tattoos that he enjoyed flaunting ever-so-much, before shrugging slightly. "Naminé mentioned that when he wakes, you disappear."
"So?"
"Maybe this is the beginning," Axel explained, a tinge of sadness punctuating his sentence.
"He's not even close. Not a single link of the chain's been completed; I check every day."
"Even though that may be true, you never know. The heart works in mysterious ways."
Roxas broke out into a smile. "You sound like some sort of greeting card."
The redhead chuckled, tossing the now finished ice cream aside before ruffling his friend's hair, resulting in a grumble and a light slap to his hand. "Don't give me any ideas there."
"You wouldn't sell too many anyway," smirked the younger. "They'd all end with something like 'Got it memorized?'"
"You love it when I say that, don't lie."
"Yeah, yeah…" Roxas's grin faltered a bit as he glanced towards the crimson sun. It was barely visible over the horizon now, its glow giving one last hurrah before making room for the crater laden moon. Twilight. This moment in time was his favorite; it made him happy to exist, albeit not fully, but it nearly made him feel.
He almost had a heart then.
"I'm scared, Axel." The statement surprised even the speaker.
"Of what?"
"I don't even know," Roxas replied softly, "I just know that I'm scared. Maybe his consciousness is and it's affecting me or… something."
Axel patted him on the shoulder before saying, "Just remember this then: When the light disappears, there's always the twilight, and when that vanishes, there's always a little speck of it at the end of the darkness." And when Roxas gave him a flittering look of bewilderment, the pyromaniac responded with a roll of his eyes. "Hey, it helps me."
Though, unbeknownst to Axel, Roxas's mind pulled the statement in and never let it go.
He would have to remember this.
