AN. This is from a scene in book one.
Fi tried to ignore Homer's blush. If they were going to be stuck down in Hell with only seven people, she hoped he would get over this thing. This embarrassing little crush that she was pretending she didn't notice because that way, later, he wouldn't he arkward around her. Not that he wasn't now.
It was tragic. Up to the point she was feeling embarrassed for him.
Fi was also feeling a little self-conscious going home. She knew how the other kids in school saw her. She knew what they said about the kids who lived up on the hill. Maybe this would be the reality check Homer needed to knock his brain back into gear. Assuming it had ever been in gear in the first place.
But right now his crush wasn't the real issue. Homer's blush, she could handle but this was ridiculous. They were only two blocks away from her home now. So close and yet so far.
"We just have to wait here for a bit." Homer whispered in her ear.
Fi nodded unable to audible reply. The smell coming from the bin they were ducking behind was so potent she thought she was going to puke. Nauseous she leaned her head against Homer. His arm came quickly around her back to support her. She frown at the contact, hoping he wasn't getting the wrong idea.
"Come on Fi." He tugged her up with him. " It's clear."
"Thank God." She sighed, moving as far away from Homer as she dared.
Fi was terrified. It wasn't just Homer's feelings but the soldiers parading around her home town with guns.
They moved cautiously along the next two blocks, ducking when required. It seemed to take forever to get to her house.
Homer told her they had to use the backdoor, so they had to jump the fence. Homer went first, then it was Fi's turn. She struggled to get over the top. She glared at the gaping hole in her jeans when she was perached on the top.
"Come on Fi. Someone might see you." Homer hissed.
She knew he was trying to encourage her but courage had never been her forte. He reached up, hooking his hands on either side of her waist. She slide down into his strong arms. As she hit the ground, she stumbled into his open arms. Her head bumped into his chest. He let out a soft grunt but held her upright. Slowly she steadied herself in his grasp. She looked up at him through her long eyelashes, blushing.
"Sorry." She whispered.
"It's ok." He muttered blushing redder then her.
They quickly moved to wards the backdoor and pushed their way inside. The house was like all the others had been. Abandoned and smelling fowl. It was only when Fi past a picture on the mantle piece did the reality of what they were facing hit her. Her parents were locked away in the showground. Their town, possibly the country, had been invaded. Their were men out on the streets trying to kill them.
And they were all alone.
All they had was each other now. They were the only ones left free.
A suddenly yell from the room across broke her thoughts. She quickly moved to the door terrified. Slowly she pushed open the door expecting to see guns pointed at Homer's head but was she was faced with was something entirely else.
She began to laugh.
She couldn't help it. Not even as she tugged the cat off Homers shoulder. She laughed so hard that before long she was in tears.
"Glad you thought that was bloody funny." Homer muttered.
"Sorry." She giggle.
"So you should be." He grinned and she broke out into another fit of giggles. He wasn't that bad, Fi decided.
She could deal with being stuck down in Hell with him.
