Selena perched herself on the brink of the balcony, trying to ignore the deep abyss below.
People had told her all her life that she did risky things. Well…this was the most risky thing she had ever done in her entire life.
'After this,' she thought, 'I will be surprised at nothing I put myself to.' Indeed she was right; what she was attempting would be a life-or-death circumstance, depending on her success.
She had to get away. Not for herself of course…she had resigned herself to her own sad fate. No, this was for someone else, someone who hadn't even entered the world of the living yet.
As she climbed down the wood trellis, she was surprised at her own bravery. She had become so accustomed to the sheer force of her will that it had never struck her that this is not what normal girls from Carvahall would do. They would stay home, get married, bear children, and keep house for their families the rest of their life without being threatened by danger. She had accomplished all but the first and last of these…quite a shocking disregard to the rules. But what did it matter anyway?
She was also amazed at how young she was. She would be twenty-one tomorrow, but that was of naught.
She still had to get away.
