Prologue:"I can take care of her, I promise" Klaus's eyes begged Stephan to tell him something reassuring, something different to the inevitable truth.
"Klaus, listen to me. You have to do this; you have to let her go. If you don't she will be collateral damage and even you won't be able to save her. You owe this to her, you owe this to me." Desperation was spread throughout Stephan's voice; he needed to convince Klaus quickly.
"But I love her" It was a whisper but echoed through the silent dark night. Defeat spread through Klaus's features, he knew what he had to do.

Klaus slowly walked towards the cabin, which Caroline and he, had called home for the past few weeks. They had been on the run for the past year, moving country to country, trying to avoid the vast number of enemy's Klaus had built up over the centuries. They had finally figured out that if they banded together they were more likely to beat Klaus. Even if they couldn't kill him, they could keep him tortured in a cell, while also torturing Caroline.
Caroline the girl who had made his heart beat again, metaphorically of course. Together for 11 years and he was still enthralled with her. Here was begrudgingly yet willingly walking towards where she was to make her forget him. He knew Stephan was right, this battle he needed to fight himself, it was unfair to see Caroline tortured again and again.
He opened the door and saw her trying to fix the curtains they had broken the other night.
"Oh hey, you are home, did you get the blood bags?" Caroline innocently looked at him while trying to hang the curtains.
"No, I did not. Love, I need to talk to you" Klaus knew he needed to do this right now or he would not have the strength to do so.
"Alright, what's up?" Caroline put the curtain down and sat at the corner of the bed. Klaus knelt so he was in front of her and she was gazing down onto him. "Sweetheart, you know that I love you, more than anything in the world. Because I love you so, I have to do what I am about to do" Klaus was crying, he looked up towards Caroline. As soon as he started crying Caroline knew what he was going to do. "No, Nik, No, please don't" Caroline kneeled while crying, her body was shaking she fell into his arms. "I have to Caroline, this is my fight. I promise when this is over, I will come looking for you" Still crying Caroline nodded, she knew this day would come even though she hoped it never would.
Klaus looked into her eyes "Caroline, you will forget ever meeting me, for the last twelve years you have been party planning, you are happy, you lead a very fulfilling life, but now you are moving to a different place where Stephan will be with you"
