Chooses to start out in slifer red instead of obelisk blue so he doesn't feel like he was given it instead of earning it even though he has the grades and skills to be one
Face Crowller in the beginning instead of Jaden, and duel some of his other major duels (like Alexis, Zane, and Chazz during the two academies duel)
Has met Zane before duel academy, while respects his dueling skills thinks he's a total ass
