He had to go, no matter what. Even if he didn't, there wasn't much for him to live for anyway, his world wasn't real, his old man was really dead now, and Auron was gone. The man who had cared for him since his mother had died, defying death to first keep a promise to Jecht, but then to watch over the boy (then man) he had grown to cherish, and later love with all of his being, had been sent.
Tidus tried to keep walking as he made his way to the end of the airship, but the thought that maybe - even if he wasn't a real person, and couldn't truly die - he would see Auron again, and the heartbreaking sounds of a young girl behind him made his feet move faster, until he was running, and then jumping, off of the ship.
When he was a boy, he never thought that dieing would be quite like this, but then, he had always dismissed his thoughts of death with a childs 'I'm going to live forever, anyway' mind-frame. It was more like he was just diving into the water for a blitzball match. He passed Yuna's father, Lord Braska, he even passed Auron (he could see him after this), and went straight to his father and recieved a high five. Haven't changed a bit, old man.
