Her eyes flickered away from the keyboard for an instant, noting the broad man coming through the doorway, before focusing again on her work. Nearly all the test results had come as expected, nearly. The one little anomaly who decided to shrink instead of die continued to baffle her to frustrating extents, and she had to struggle to keep herself from shutting down the computer right then and there.

The broad man was at her side now, holding a small sheaf of papers in his hands. That could mean anything though: new news, new orders, new… something. She didn't allow herself to be distracted anymore and once again focused on the numbers floating upon the screen before her. She still didn't get anywhere.

Finally, annoyed at having to deal with anyone around at all, rather than the quiet, alone time she usually had in the dim lab, she whipped her head around and said coldly, "What?"

Vodka stared at her silently for a moment before sticking out the little paper stack and grunted, "News," before shuffling quietly out of the lab.

Shiho waited until he was gone before she glanced at the papers… and did a double-take. The image didn't change, and she could feel her eyes widen involuntarily as she bit down on her trembling lips. Disbelief struck her in waves as the smiling face of her beautiful sister stared up at her from the news column of the newspaper. The article's title read, "Woman Gunned Down in the Middle of the Night!" They didn't know her name, of course. Abstract thoughts such as this continued float through her head as she processed the information provided by the paper.

It wasn't enough.

What would be? She looked around, expecting to see someone with whom she could question, but there was no one. Had she really said she liked being alone? She stared at the article again, and that word echoed through her mind infinitely, like a mantra being used to shackle her. She felt a single tear escape, and bit down harder on her lip, lest she lose all self-control. She had no one to talk to, not even her sister, now. Their moments had been few, but precious, a chance to be human again after spending weeks and years developing what could be called death, but now…

She was alone.

Alright, this one just sorta popped into my head while I was pretending to pay attention in... presumably math, so, I hope you've enjoyed it... That said, constructive criticism is appreciated, as are any other reviews, of course. :) It should probably have been longer, but I'm really tired now, and I've been editing for about 10 minutes, and my bed time is fast approaching, so, thanks for reading!
