Afternoon
--------------

The skin of her cheek feels so soft against the palm of my hand. The sun of this alien planet is shining down on us and she's smiling, more beautiful than I've ever seen her before. I realize I'm smiling too. She puts her hand on mine, moves it across her face and kiss my fingertips gently. I feel like I've been hit by lightning as the soft touch of her lips against my fingertips evokes a powerful wave of love and desire that surges through me. "I love you, Kathryn..." I don't say that out loud, of course, knowing it would probably frighten her and the moment would be lost. But it echoes through my mind and I hope she can see it in my eyes. Touching her face was a friendly gesture, at first anyway, but my hand lingered on her cheek a little too long for it to be considered only friendly. I just couldn't bring myself to remove it, touching her felt so good, even if it was only her face. And I found myself dreaming of touching the rest of her, every inch of her body and every corner of her soul. Of giving her comfort, pleasure, and love.

His eyes betray him. Even if his lips don't move his eyes tell me everything, they speak the words I'm longing to say to him. But I can't tell him so I kiss his fingertips instead, imagining it's his lips, hoping he'll understand. Watching him respond to my kiss with a slight tremble makes me all warm inside, fuelling the fire that's my love for him and I nearly give in to my desires of drawing him to me, holding him tight, kissing him passionately and... telling him... but I can't... although my heart aches with need to let him know... no, I can't... but then I do tell him anyway..."I love you, Chakotay." The words fall graciously and naturally from my lips, as if I've spoken them a thousand times before. I look up into his eyes in time to see the expression of surprise on his face. Surely he's not surprised of how I feel? Of saying it, perhaps. Moments later his expression changes into joy, and he smiles his dimpled smile, just for me, embraces me tenderly and whispers the words I've longed to hear for so long.

"I love you too, Kathryn." This time I do say it out loud. The moment doesn't disappear, she's not frightened. Instead, she kisses me, gently, yet passionately, and I know this afternoon is the beginning of something amazing, wonderful, and beautiful. I'm the happiest man in the Delta Quadrant.
