Freshman Jinx

A new student quickly learns the rules and her place in the hierarchy of the school
Chapter 1
Sixteen year-old High School Freshman Melinda Warner walked into PS 16 on her first day of school, she always hated coming to a new school and thus rarely made any friends even though Melinda was an overtly friendly person. Melinda went to her locker and put her backpack inside.
"So, you're Melinda Warner?" a girl's voice said from behind Melinda. Melinda closes her locker and turns to face the girl who had spoken.
"I am and you are?" Melinda replied, crossing her arms.
"Alexandra Cabot, Student Council President and resident hottie of the school."
"What do you want?" Melinda asks, clearly irritated by the blonde.
"We here at PS 16 are required to recruit one Freshman student to a club or group activity." Alex explained.
"And you want me on the Student Council?" Melinda asked, finishing Alex's statement for her.
"Yes, precisely." Alex said.
"I'll pass." Melinda said with authority in her voice.
"Wh- what? You're passing up a chance to make a lasting impression on everyone in this school?" the blonde asked, obviously puzzled.
"I am, now, if you'll excuse me, Miss President, I don't wish to be late for my first class." Melinda said before walking away from a bewildered Alex.
Alex was seething with rage when her boyfriend of two and half months, Trevor Langan walked up to her with his headphones on.
"Hey babe, what's up?"
"I was rejected by a worthless Freshman." Alex hissed in anger.
