Wanted: BOYFRIEND
Synopsis : Apparently, my friend has this perfect plan to escape my mom's death glare whenever she sees me playing volleyball. And that plan? She says that I need a boyfriend in order to show her that I'm done with the very sport she hates. How hard could it be? She says that it's easy, knowing that the student body is clearly dominated by boys. However, she knows this one specific boy that I could latch onto without fear of being used. And he's Hinata Shouyo from first year in class one.
It was a sunny June afternoon and sitting under the shades of the trees was where Ryota Michime is most comfortable on lunch periods. She was eating her usual sloppy bento made by her mom and it tasted stale. She couldn't complain, though. "MII-CHAAAAAN!" A shriek startled her from completely stabbing the poor omelet. Michime looked up and saw that her Korean friend, Choi Min Ki, was dashing across the school lawn at full speed.
"I found. . . the perfect. . . c-candidate!" Min Ki told her in between pants as she was sprawled in an unlady-like manner at the grass.
"Candidate for what?" Michime asked skeptically, not really knowing if she wanted the answer.
Her friend suddenly sat up and grabbed her hands. "The perfect candidate as your boyfriend, silly!" Min Ki said with twinkling eyes.
"Uh. . ." Michime wasn't really surprised that her friend had found a boy toy in such a short span of one hour. Despite the hesitation, she forced herself to say something. "Who?"
"Hinata Shoyo, First-year Class One."
The girl raised her eyebrow, she wasn't that friendly to her batch mates so she had no idea on who Hinata is. "Who?" Michime repeated.
"I heard he's with the volleyball team." Min Ki added, as if her friend will know him immediately.
Sighing, Michime said to the excited girl, "I don't think that this will work at all, Ki."
"Listen to me, Ryota Michime! You didn't get big boobs for nothing!" With that, Michime looked down at her chest and frowned. "Boys love you!" Her friend finished with a smile and thumbs up.
Michime groaned in annoyance, "They like my body, not me!"
This time, Min Ki was the one who raised an eyebrow and shrugged nonchalantly. "I heard Hinata-kun isn't a ladies man at all so your V-card would be fiiine!"
"I'm not worried about that at all." Michime lied, she isn't going to chicken out on this if Min Ki thinks she's just a coward.
"Then we'll talk to this Hinata-kun, then!" Min Ki connected her arms with Michime's and grinned like a child, "See if he's going to be nice!"
"I still got a bad feeling about this." All Michime wanted was to reverse time and stop her friend from ever coming to the conclusion that she's in desperate need of a boyfriend to divert her mom's attention.
Earlier that day. . .
The lights are blaring. The people are cheering. The ball is flying towards the line.
I have to follow it.
I have to save it.
I'm the libero, after all.
I'm useless if I can't do the simple thing I'm supposed to do.
Follow where the ball goes, Michime, I said to myself.
Stretch your arms—
"Mii-chaaaan! Wake up!" A smiling face startled me as I looked up from the source of the voice that woke me up. "I've got neeews!" Min Ki was grinning from ear-to-ear, standing in front of my desk.
Grunting from the interruption of my dream, I planted my face on my palm in annoyance. She wakes me when I'm at the thrilling part! Urgh! "Stop waking me up like that!" I glared at her with passion. How dare she interrupt such heavenly dream!
With this, Min Ki pouted but took a seat beside me nonetheless. "Why do you even bother to wake up at five in the morning?" She mumbled in wonder, twirling her long black raven hair.
"Gotta jog. . ." I rolled my light gray irises on the question of my bored friend. "And play volleyball. . ." I said in a matter-of-fact tone because it was an obvious reason. She knows I love volleyball with feelings.
Min Ki frowned at me, "But I thought your mom hates volleyball."
I sighed in defeat, slumping down on my wooden school chair. "She does. . .n't." I said with hesitation then shrugged. "Mom just hates me in picking such 'lowly sport' on top of badminton." She just doesn't understand why I love it.
"Then why?" She whined in despair as if my decisions of rebellion affect her life.
I stood up suddenly, my short dark blonde hair bounced at my abrupt movement. "I love volleyball, Ki-chii." I said with deep passion and abysmal feelings, my slightly bushy eyebrows knitted together.
Min Ki smiled at me lopsidedly, "That much?"
"Yep. . ." I replied as I slumped back at my chair, now eyeing the incoming students. I saw Tsukishima, a very lucky member of the boys' volleyball club, I must say. I gave the tall blond a nod of acknowledgement, considering that he's the one who tutored me in our mid-term exams. His smartness rubbed off on me and saved my ass out there. He nodded back in reply but did not say anything else. He's the type of guy who's usually filled with snarky comments but I wonder what's with him today.
I ponder at the thought for a while. When I looked at Min Ki she had this malicious smirk that I so wanted to slap away. "What?!" I demanded with a glare but she just made a figure of a heart with her hands and then pointed at our dear classmate, Tsukishima-kun.
'I am not, nor ever, going like Tsukishima-kun' is what I wanted to tell her. I knew that, from Min Ki's twinkling eyes and cheshire grin, she was definitely going to make a move on pushing me with the tall blond. I kept my silent glare. Perhaps she'll stop if I ignore her, I thought.
"What's with you and Otakun*?"
I forced myself not to face palm at the question of Min Ki. "Nothing. We are mere friends." I told her with honesty. There really is nothing going on with us, aside from me being envious of Tsukishima's privilege in joining the volleyball club.
Min Ki rolled her deep brown irises but shrugged the topic, thankfully, knowing that she won't get any intel from bugging me. "Anyway, this news!"
"What?"
"The school is bringing in some students with them in the volleyball boys' tournament next week!" She squealed in delight and shook me. "I hear those boys are as hot as the suuuun~!"
I raised an eyebrow to her statement, "You think Tsukishima-kun is a nerd." I decided to point out.
Min Ki pouted at my statement, "He's a different case! Smarty-pants shouldn't be allowed at court." The two of us were silent as more of our classmates went to the room. Suddenly, Min Ki smiled at me for no reason and shrieked in happiness, "Oh! Oh! What if-!" She stopped mid-sentence and giggled like those American movies we used to laugh at.
Surprised and skeptical at the same time, I wasn't so sure if I wanted to know what Min Ki got in mind. Sometimes, she's just plain weird and sometimes, she's just too intelligent for her own good. "What if. . .?" I voiced out.
"What if you get a boyfriend and your mom will certainly be happy that you're having more time to fuss over that boyfriend and no time for volleyball at all!" She finished, smiling gleefully at her suggestion to my problem about mom and volleyball.
"Ki-chii, I did not understand a thing you just said." I deadpanned, blinking at her. I don't think my mom will be happy in me flirting on boys and trying hard to be a hopeless romantic, to be honest.
Min Ki drew a stick figure of me, on one of my notebooks, and a stick figure of a guy inside a poorly drawn asymmetrical heart. "You plus boyfriend equals mom thinking that you'll be quitting volleyball!"
This is the dumbest suggestion you have ever concluded to, Min Ki. That's what I had on my mind and I could sense that Min Ki's currently listing all possible candidates in being my boyfriend. I sighed, "What makes you think that?" My mom's not really the type to be easily persuaded, I wanted to add.
"I don't know. But it's worth a shot, don't you think, Mii-chan?"
"Perhaps. . ." Truthfully, I wasn't the type to fish out for boys but I had never tried to get a boyfriend so I don't really know if Min Ki's idea will actually work. "But the question is who?"
"I don't know." Min Ki admitted in defeat.
I mentally slapped myself but smiled and nodded sarcastically for her sake, "You don't know many things, Choi Min Ki." I chanted to her. That moment our homeroom teacher, Takeda-sensei, finally came in the room which forced Min Ki to stand up. I inwardly laughed at Min Ki's pained expression in leaving our current discussion. I could tell that she's been waiting to become the matchmaker of my love life.
She looked back at me and made a face, "Shut up." With that, Min Ki transferred to the other side of the room, where she was seated near our classmate whom she despises, Yamaguchi-san.
The whole morning period, I thought of what she said. Perhaps it's time I get a boyfriend? I blinked at the sudden thought in my head. Argh! Michi! Don't listen to her. You don't need a guy to be your knight and shining armor!
Author's Note:
*'Otaku' meant nerd and I've decided to make word play so I've put in the honorific '-kun' in the end, since it's mostly used to guys. So Tsuki has a new nickname! Yaaay- wait, am I allowed to do that?
Anyway, guess who's lovin' Haikyuu! -raises hands like a dork-
So, I'm inlove with the anime and I decided to try and contribute to the lovely fandom. I haven't got the right facts yet since I haven't even started with the manga, but boy isn't that long as shit. Don't worry, I'll try and read it as fast as I can.
Review, follow and favorite if you enjoyed! Anyway, sayonara and see you all 'till I update!
