Days
It had been raining for days. The sky was a dark, misty gray; the clouds low and mourning in the sky. Drops of water poured over the edges of buildings like mercury, dark and thick, splashing their way down the streets and into the earth.
She walked, slowly. She took her time when it was like this outside. Savoring every wisp of breeze sending shudders through her body. Every soft splash of rain against her shoes. The gentle chill would clear her head; maybe today she could think.
Because two weeks ago, she had kissed him. Two weeks ago, she had given in to something that had been growing inside of her for months. Two weeks ago, her rain had begun.
It wasn't something she had planned. But there among the gardens, she just let go. Freed herself of all those prejudices, the warnings from her mother that had somehow melted into gentle pushes towards the one boy she never thought she'd end up with.
She dragged her feet across the ground, mercilessly stepping in a puddle, sending jovial droplets of water across the glistening street. And suddenly she could think of nothing but him.
The thing she loved about him wasn't his intellect, although she both respected and feared his ability to shut off all emotion and just know. She loved the way he made her feel. Nothing else could ever make her just release all of her inhibitions and do things she never thought she'd do. Suddenly that kiss shared with a calloused boy on a piano bench didn't seem so crazy. She had been lonely. But that wasn't what had happened at the wedding.
She wasn't alone; no, she had a boyfriend. But however much they had drifted apart since that mysterious feeling in the back of her heart had wandered into town, they were still together. And that was as much security as she needed. She wasn't lonely. She loved. And that's why she kissed him.
Crossing the street towards the courthouse, she sat down wearily. She ran her hands across the dark granite beneath her, a sigh escaping her lips. It felt as if there were a powder keg being lit within her stomach, about to go off at any moment.
And suddenly he was there beside her. The last person she wanted to see. The person she had been desperately trying to avoid for two weeks. She went to stand, run away, but an arm was quickly circled around her waist.
He stood behind her, holding her tightly. Whispering into her dampened hair. It only took a second for her heart to collide with her chest, pounding harshly with the rain.
Two seconds. His hand caressed her side gently.
Three seconds. She felt his breath against her neck.
Four seconds. He whispered those three words for the first time in his life. She lost all control over her thought processes.
It took a full minute for Rory to open her eyes. She inhaled deeply, loving the late spring scent, trying hopelessly to regain her posture. She turned hesitantly within his arms, wanting to look at him.
His clothes clung tightly to his body, saturated from the weather, water rolling down his chest and falling to the ground. He pulled her closer, the pressure of her body against his almost too much to bear.
She smiled. Ran her finger lightly down his cheek. And kissed him. Suddenly all her fears dissolved, washed away by the rain. Finally she realized just what she had been afraid of. Something she had been doing all along.
Loving him.
It had been raining for days. But suddenly, there was the sun.
