Nothing's Wrong

I walked home slowly and quietly just as every other day. Julie Henigen my best friend ran up to me.

"Hey Beth," She looked at the book I was reading, "Tales of the Ancient Treasure! I love that book."

At that moment my head popped out of the book and I snapped it shut like I was mad, and walked a little faster. After about 10 steps I got Julie's birthday present out. It was a small box like a jewelry case, wrapped inside some party like wrapping paper.

"Beth, what did I do?" she walked up to me and put her hand on my shoulder.

"Nothing Jewels, just nothing."

"Come on tell me, I'm your best friend."

"You turned 16 three minutes ago and I have to wait one more minute." I smiled to let her know I was joking then handed her gift to her.

"Happy birthday Jewels!"

"Thanks Beth. Incoming love 12 o'clock." We laughed a bit as the boys pull up.

"Hey ladies want a ride," Tyler asked playfully.

"No, we're good." I replied.

"Come on Beth, we never hang with the guys." Julie said, yanking my arm. I snagged my arm away rubbed it a bit then pulled off my cap.

"Did you forget I have treatment in a half hour?"

"No," William said, all sad like.

Tyler smiled at us then drove off. Just me and Julie again.

"Hey Beth, do you ever miss your hair?"

"All the time," I said, hugging her.

I got home and my dad hugged me,

"How's my cancer patient?"

"Sick," I said, not feeling like talking.

"It'll all be over soon," my mom said as she set the table, "How's William holding up?"

"Good."

I went to my room and called William. We booted up his laptop and listened to 'our' song. His father wrote it for me 2 years ago, when I was first diagnosed with Leukemia, from there days went on as normal. About 3 or 4 weeks passed with nothing new until November 28. The 3rd snow fall this year (yes I do count), I was skating on the ice with William, Tyler, and Julie when I tripped over my skate lace. I clonked my head real bad and the three of them rushed over.

"Beth, you ok," Julie was first.

"Itty Bit, what happened?" Then Tyler, and last Will "Oh My God!"

That's all I remember, I've been laying in this stupid hospital for 3 weeks. I am getting sicker each day.

"I'm going to die in a week." William was with me wiping away the tears on my face, "Don't say that B."

"It's true, I can feel it," I paused, "I have a gut feeling deep down."

"Well then that feeling is wrong. I got to go to work," he leaned in and hugged me, the last hug of my life. As he walked away from me I heard him sobbing. Julie walked in.

"Hey Hunny."

"I'm fine, please don't ask."

"Actually," there was a pause, "I want you to die with this on."

"Thank you, do you think I'll die?"

"Yeah, but you'll still be with us. You'll also be with God."

I leaned in to hug her and unplugged something. My heart was dropping fast.

"Jewel give me the bracelet," I grabbed it and slipped it on. "Here's what you wanted." I smiled and closed my eyes.

"I love you. Pass," I gasp three times. "it…on."

She screamed, "Nurse Help!"

"Help Somebody!"

With each word it got darker and quieter.

Three weeks later…

"My baby," sobbed Mrs. Mcnaugten.

"Chill, Mrs. Mcnaugten. I miss Beth too but she's with God now," he rubbed her back, his phone rang and he stepped outside.

"Jewels"

"Beth and I are going to the movies, you want to come?"

"Jewel, Beth is dead, where have you been?"

The line died and Tyler stood there thinking of Beth's death causing all this. William moving, Julie in a mental institution, and Tyler still sitting in Beth's room every night with her mother crying on him…
