Logan sleeps well through the night, tucked beneath a soft, blue duvet. He has no dreams, despite the heavy, complex pain in his heart.
Just before sunrise, a voice wakes him.
"Logan…"
The boy startles and sits up, hazy from his deep sleep. He rubs his eyes when he sees a familiar blond standing beside him.
"Kindall? Is that you?"
"Yeah," he replies. His figure is clad in skinny jeans and a flannel shirt, and he sets his hands casually in his pockets. "I had to come back to apologize."
"Apologize? What for?" Logan's heart pumps fast in his chest.
"For hurting you," says Kendall. A leopard print sneaker kicks at the floor and he stares down. "I'm real sorry."
"It's okay, I forgive you."
A softness hovers in Kendall's eyes and he extends a hand. "Come outside with me."
"Outside? Now?" Logan gets out of bed nervously and takes the slender hand before him. The fingers are cold but they feel like home.
"Just follow me," Kendall tells him. He leads the shorter boy out of his room and onto the balcony. They slip through the apartment without a noise, just smiling weakly at each other.
When they step outside, Logan closes the door behind them and goes to the railing, where Kendall is propping his elbows.
"See? Just like old times," Kendall laughs. He points out to the slowly rising sun, and Logan instantly remembers how they used to sit together and watch it. That was so long ago, it feels like it never really happened.
"Logan?"
"Yes?"
"I didn't mean what I said. About you and me."
"I know." Logan puts his chin in his palm and closes his eyes. He recalls Kendall openly telling fans that they aren't gay and never will be.
"You know?" Kendall gasps, a bit of color coming into his creamy face.
"I could tell. I know how you feel."
"Oh," the blond says with a sigh. They both look out over the city and to the sunrise. Kendall clears his throat and whispers, "we would have been a great couple."
"I know," Logan replies in a tiny, tragically sad voice. "When are you leaving?"
"Real soon."
"Do me one thing?"
"I can try."
Logan holds Kendall's hand again, and this time he guides him inside. They go back to his bedroom and Logan silently begs for Kendall to lay with him.
"Not long," Kendall says. "But okay."
They climb beneath the sheets and Logan collapses into Kendall's arms. He begins to cry. "It's not fair," he sobs.
"I know. I'm sorry."
"It feels so right."
Kendall nods. "I wrote a song for you," he says, and starts to hum. It turns into gentle singing. Logan closes his eyes.
"Logan?"
A different voice now. It's his mother.
"Huh?"
"Who are you talking to? You sound sad. Are you alright?"
She opens the door and reveals a lonely Logan, clinging to a pillow.
"I'm fine, mom," Logan insists. "It's nothing." He closes his eyes and swallows his silent tears.
Kendall is gone. Kendall's been gone and he's not coming back. Logan can't even remember the lyrics.
