The Man Who Deserved Better
His breathing slowed. Looking around, he calmed down.
He was attacked by mutts, valiantly fighting them off from decapitating him and ripping off his skin in slick slivers.
When he begged Katniss to blow up the mutts and in the process, also himself too. Finnick pushed off the offending mutts and shoved himself down one of the many tunnels. Barely escaping the blast.
He walked down through the tunnels. Barely remembering his way out. The grim mouldy walls reflecting the horrific times they are facing, reminded him that The Star Squad would join the other districts, by thinking him dead. When his heart is still beating away, not as dormant and blown up as they'd believe. His heart slowed its rapid pace that it had been on since he first saw the mutts.
After walking for miles in the direction that he believed to be the way that he knew that had planned the previous night. He stopped to check for the game makers traps.
After disabling one or two, he took a deep breath and carried on. He knew the capital well enough to know a basic understanding of where to go, but glancing at the buildings that were war-torn from the efforts by the unbreakable rebel forces to take the capital and defeat Snow to free the districts from his merciless tyranny.
Gripping his trident in his hand more tightly, he continued his march to the capital, to try to fight his squad. 'Try' being the operative word. He was stunned that he was able to march his way straight up to President Snow's Mansion.
Pushing open the doors, he held his trident to be ready for a fight. Instead, he was met with a rather loud and high pitched scream. From the one and only Effie Trinket.
She pulled him into a stiff hug and asked about his miraculous return from the dead.
"Who's dead?" He asked simply.
"Gale. Peacekeepers. He wasn't able to ingest his Nightlock pill in time before they executed him where he stood." Effie said, tears hidden behind layers of makeup, but still visible enough to see. "And Prim."
Sadness started to creep up. He knew that Katniss would be devastated by the loss of her beloved sister.
"How?" He asked, his voice barely above a whisper. He'd come to respect Prim, she'd took to caring for the wounded in the revolution with heart, not letting the horrors of the recent times break her spirit.
"An explosion went off near the gates. Rebel medics came in. Then another explosion went off. Killing them all. Katniss got injured. It's not fatal. The Mockingjay survived." Effie said, her motherly feelings for Katniss shining through.
"Is Annie here?" He asked
"Yes. Come on" She replied. Effie motioned him to follow her through the elegant corridors of the mansion in the direction of the his love.
After a few heartfelt reunions. All the remaining victors sat down and discuss what was to happen. In the light of the symbolic hunger games of The Capitals children, he voted "Yes" with Annie.
Knowing that the future was bright, even with repairing the damage from decades of brutality from The Capital. He knew that what ever happened, they'd be free.
Authors Note:
This is for my sister, MissDramaAngel, who believes Finnick deserved better than he got. She gave me parameters and I hope I did well. :)
I know this is short, but this helps it fit in with the canon (and doesn't interfere with what Finnick and Annie's happiness is, I'll let you decide!)
Fingers crossed that there is no errors.. MissDramaAngel is quite impatient. ;)
I am now running multiple ideas for oneshots. If I write them is another story all together.
