Elrond rubbed his eyes, trying to convince some life back into them. His candle was burning low, more smoke now then flame. He had to get these scouting reports read before tomorrow, as all his defenders expected to be briefed. He'd been going through them all day, forgetting everything else and still he was not finished. So, pushing aside his weariness and relighting the candle he continued to read. But before he got very far he was interrupted by a faint tap-tap-tap at his door. Confused, he got up to answer it. He looked out into the hallway but couldn't see anyone.
"Hello?" he called
"Ada…" came a small voice from near the ground. Elrond looked down… into the face of a bleary eyed, messy haired little four year old Dúnadan. He smiled.
"What are you doing up Estel? He asked as he kneeled down to look him in the face. "It is time for you to be in bed sleeping"
"Can't go sleep" the little boy said simply, rubbing his eyes with a floppy fist. "You hasn't tucked me in or gived me my night time cuddle"
"Ah, I see." Elrond smiled. "Well we'll soon fix that"
The papers well and truly forgotten Elrond scooped him up, holding him close and tight. He took him back to his room, rocking him gently and singing as he went. Estel nuzzled against him, snuggling close with a soft, slight sigh. Elrond's heart was filling with warmth as he held his little one in his arms. He lay him down on his bed and planted a gentle kiss on his forehead. As he pulled the covers over him and moved to leave he heard Estel whisper
"Le melon Ada" (I love you Daddy)
His heart so full he thought it might burst, Elrond whispered back "I love you too Estel. Always and forever"
