My name is Snowfang. I belong to SpringPack. I'm a learner. That means I'm in training to be a Provider or a Defender. We have teachers to teach the learners. Redfoot is my teacher. I'm training to be a Provider. I had terrible luck when Redfoot became my teacher, because she's one of the crabbiest dogs in the Pack.
"Snowfang! Pay attention! How will you be a Provider if you can't catch anything?!" Redfoot says fairly often. "What kind of dog will you be then?"
"I would be a Manfriend, but I'm not soft! I just brought down a huge deer!" I reply. Manfriends belong to humans. They live cushy lives, eating chicken, and living in little houses. I know a secret, though; Redfoot's mate is a handsome Manfriend named Timber. But I'm getting off track. Let me get started with my history. It won't make sense in the beginning, but it will in the end.
" Come here, Snowfang," Grandfather said after I had been made a learner. "Its time to hear your history."
"Yay!" I said. "I'm so excited!" I ran into his cave, skidding to a stop by the back wall. Grandfather chuckled.
"The four Packs were begun by four dogs. Their names were Winter, Summer, Spring, and Autumn. They-"
"Was my great-great-great-great-great grandmother Spring?" I asked, interrupting the story.
"Yes. Now listen. The four siblings were Manfriends at first. Then, one day their owners moved away…" At this point, I could practically see the siblings, abandoned in the cold of the winter months. His stories have a way of doing that.
"What will we do?" cried Spring, her light green eyes watery against her yellow fur.
"I don't know, sis!" Summer said, his green eyes bright against his yellow fur.
"I'm going into the woods!" Winter boasted, his black eyes blending into his fur.
" I'm s-staying h-here." studdered Autumn, her brown eyes frightened against her red fur.
" See you three later," called Winter." I'm going. Bye Autumn. I'll miss you." He walked into the woods.
Spring and Summer soon followed. However, Spring was the strongest and bravest, and she promised Autumn that she'd protect her. The two sisters were very different. Autumn was smaller, faster, and easily frightened. She was also extremely loyal. Spring was the biggest, bravest, and smartest. She was also the first to master hunting and fighting.
Winter was different, too. He was smallest, slowest, and sneakiest. Sumer was bigger than Autumn, but smaller than Spring. He swam well, and he was very handsome. The siblings found mates, after which Spring and Autumn separated. The siblings formed the Packs, upon which they had their names altered to end in moon. Moonpack watches over us. Your father is now Yellowmoon, our leader. Grandfather finished the story.
"You see, that's why Springpack and Autumnpack have been so close," Grandfather said. "I hope that you become leader one day and continue the friendship – nothing matters more than friendship!"
The End… for now…
