Night's Rain

You're 16, and you know it's wrong. Or maybe you don't. You're not sure anymore.

A deep purple is bleeding down your face. Oh, it's raining. Not very hard, just enough to go unnoticed. And you're remembering things you wish you could forget. Like how you used to treat him, you and her both. But back then, it seemed so right. He's just a monster, isn't he? Not even human, why should you care? He even killed her, he deserved it, right? Everything he got was coming to him.

But he was so small. So little, how could he have known any better? It wasn't his choice, if it was, he never would have chosen this. And you know it.

As you got older, you stopped torturing him. Why the sudden change of heart? Because you feared for your life. He learned to control it, bending the sands to his will, he defended himself. He didn't care that you two were family. You never did, so why should he? Because you're human, and he's not. He doesn't even look like you.

Then you remember back when you were10, he was 8. You're not sure why, but you do remember yelling at him, calling him horrible things. At first he just took it, flinching every-so-often. Then you stop, stumped and out of things to say. Breathing hard, you just stare hard into his eyes, you're both shacking. Your own eyes wonder to his forehead, there was no tattoo back then. You look back to his eyes, their glazed. And suddenly you feel remorse. You had said some afoul things, and you don't even remember why, how childish. But that's what you were, a child. A child who missed his mom.

The tears fall, and you feel the sand beneath your feet shift. And you're scared. You'd forgotten he could kill you with ease, and would. You remember him looking at you with cold eyes as the sand wrapped around your body. You remember crying and begging for your life. Remember the unbelievable pain and his sharp voice saying he hated you, just before you fell into darkness.

You woke up in the hospital about two weeks later. Almost every bone in your body was broken. They didn't think you'd live. You shouldn't have, should never have woken up. But you did, and you knew you'd have to live with those memories the rest of both your lives.

No one ever thinks about how much words hurt. You didn't, not until after the fact, but then, it was too late. And you deserved all you got.

After that, you stayed away from him. That pain making you stay away from him, for the next four years. You were 14, he was 12. And you had a mission, to invade Leaf and give Sound an opening to attack, you almost died then too. That's when things really started to change. After he met someone who knew pain like his. Someone who cared, because you couldn't, because no one else could. That's when he said those two words that seem so easy to say, but are almost impossible. And everything was almost okay.

And now, you're standing in the rain and you remember. He's standing in front of you. The rain is heavier now, and all the purple is gone, leaving you naked. And you think, hope, he's forgiven you for those old, long-past, childish acts. But what if he hasn't? He's ruler now, he could kill you and say you came at him first and everyone would believe him. What if that moment still burns fresh in his mind?

You smile, because you can't admit you afraid of dieing.
