What Could Have Been
Chapter 1
Lady Eowyn was to marry the King soon. Preparations were already being made for the couple, and the town was eager for the upcoming event. Everyone thought they were the perfect couple, a uniting symbol between kingdoms. Yes, the two got along well. And there was no doubt that Eowyn got what she wanted. But sometimes she wondered if this was what she truly wanted. She was going to be made queen, her fiancé clearly the most eligible bachelor in all of Middle Earth, but something in the depths of her heart was telling her that something was missing. It wasn't just the fact that Aragorn initially wanted to marry Arwen but was persuaded by the people to take Eowyn instead. It was also something she wanted in a man that she felt he lacked. For one thing, he was a bit too old for her so they couldn't exactly relate to each other all the time. And though he was affectionate and very kind to her, she sometimes found herself thinking back to the time in the Houses of Healing when she would sit and enjoy the company of her dear friend Faramir. It was odd, though, because if Aragorn was one thing, it was a friend, yet she thought Faramir was a different kind of friend. She didn't know how to think of it. She decided though, that it was probably just a mild case of cold feet.
A month before the wedding, she had asked Faramir to visit her and keep her company while Aragorn was making preparations for the wedding. He came, as expected, and the two went for a walk around the garden. "How is the King?", Faramir asked Eowyn. She quickly replied, "He is good. Busy with the wedding preparations, but all in all, good." Faramir looked at her and said "Forgive me for asking, my lady, but isn't it usually the lady who makes the arrangements?" Eowyn thought for awhile and replied, "Yes, but he is king so he will make sure this is a beautiful and grand wedding. He says he'll take care of everything for me." "I see." Faramir said, and looked away. After a moment of silence, Eowyn asked him, "You think it's natural to have second thoughts?" Faramir quickly looked up at her eyes, then after a few seconds, quietly said, "It's the rest of your life. Could be the hardest decision. Or the easiest one." They held each other's gaze for a while longer until Aragorn entered the garden and greeted Eowyn with a kiss on the cheek. He looked at Faramir and said, "Good man, how are you?" Faramir smiled and said, "Good. Thank you. I must be off now, though." Eowyn frowned and asked, "Won't you be joining us for supper?" "No, thank you. I must really be off now. My apologies. Perhaps another time.", he replied. He shook hands with Aragorn and said farewell to Eowyn. Then he was gone. "Let's go in for supper now, my dear." Aragorn said with a smile.
