Hey all!
So here's a random little drabble, hope you enjoy it! Also, huge thanks to my wonderful beta, AmyLouise :)
Disclaimer: I own nothing but the plot.
What's In A Name?
Malfoy.
The name itself wields its own power and draws respect. It is but a word, a jumble of letters, yet it has a tangible presence, as though it were a living, breathing entity. To bear the name is to wield that power, direct that respect unto oneself and become all that the name personifies. That is the responsibility of every Malfoy. To be a Malfoy is not only to take the name; it is to carry the weight of every Malfoy of the past, to uphold the traditions of generations past, to create new respect in the eyes of the world and to solidify that power in every way possible. It is not enough to marry into the family, or even to be born into it. One must prove one's worth to be granted the title of Malfoy. It is an honour and a curse.
To be a Malfoy is to be despised for it, yet simultaneously be envied. Others – the world in general – believe that life as a Malfoy is one of indulgent luxury, a life without hardship or the trials that others face. That belief may hold a grain of truth but, like all beliefs, is clouded in a veil of illusion. Indulgent luxury does not come without a price. The lack of physical hardship does not counter all other trials of life. There are other complications that come with bearing a name of such weight that most could not even begin to imagine. Like all those with power, there are those who would wish to harness it for themselves. The need to be strong is not just a desire, but a necessity: to be strong of mind, to withstand the pressures of society, the demands of the public. A facade of indifference, a mask of authority, regardless of what troubles lie beneath the surface, is a requirement of a Malfoy.
So to those who ask, "what's in a name?" I would say: the weight of the world.
