Disclaimer: Sadly, I own neither Saving Hope nor Daniel Gillies
Pairing: Joel & Alex (Jalex)
Rating: T
Summary: Alex forgets about Valentine's Day.
Author's Note: Title comes from a Sia song of the same name.
"Your love lifts me up like helium,
Your love lifts me up
When I'm down, down down,
When I've hit the ground,
You're all I need,
'Cause your love lifts me up like helium.
And if you let go I'll float towards the sun,
I'm stronger 'cause you fill me up."
Alex Reid sighed with relief as she unlocked the front door, walked into the house and stood still with her back against the closed door for a few seconds, relishing the fact that she was finally home.
She'd worked a double-shift and she was so exhausted that she'd even thought about calling Joel to give her a ride home.
But by some miracle she managed to find the energy to drive herself home.
She knew the kids would be asleep at this hour, but she hoped that Joel might still be awake.
As if her thoughts had conjured him, she heard a low whistle coming from the foyer as her husband came toward her and took in the dark shadows beneath her hazel eyes, and all the strands of her beautiful dark hair that had come loose from her usually perfect ponytail.
"Look at you," Joel said softly, "Tough shift?"
Alex nodded, "Did you wait up for me, Doctor Goran? Are the kids asleep?"
Joel nodded, "Yes they are. And yes I did, Doctor Reid. We have to celebrate."
"What are we celebrating?" Alex whispered, still not moving from the place where she stood leaning against the door.
Alex's eyes widened as she mentally checked to make sure that she didn't forget their anniversary or Joel's birthday.
Joel's birthday isn't for another month.
We already celebrated our anniversary.
It's Tuesday.
It's February.
It's the fourteenth.
Oh crap.
It's Valentine's Day.
Alex suddenly felt deflated as if all the oxygen had left her body all at once, and she sank to the floor, her back resting against the door
Joel watched as his wife's lovely mouth formed a perfect o of surprise. He was about to smile when her eyes suddenly filled with tears.
"Hey," Joel whispered, as he stepped toward her and eliminated the space between them in three quick strides and he was standing beside her. A few seconds later, Joel was seated on the floor next to her, his back resting against the door
"It's Valentine's Day." She whispered.
Joel smiled, "Yes ma'am it certainly is. Now come inside so we can celebrate properly."
"Joel, baby, I'm sorry. I forgot. I'm a terrible wife. Can you…"
Before the words were even out of her mouth, Joel's lips were on hers. When she was breathless, his voice was in her ear.
"You are a wonderful, extraordinary, incredible, gorgeous, sexy wife. And I love you. Do you hear me, Alex Reid?"
Alex nodded, a slow smile crossing her face, "Even though I forgot Valentine's Day?" She whispered, as she let her head rest on his shoulder.
It was Joel's turn to smile. "Yes, Doctor Reid, even though you forgot Valentine's Day. Now, are we going to sit on the floor all night? Or do you want to come inside?"
"Alex?" Joel whispered, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead.
"I'm so tired, Joel baby." Alex mumbled drowsily.
Joel chuckled, "Alex love, you're not tired. You're exhausted. Let's go to bed." As he spoke he lifted his wife into his arms as if she weighed nothing at all, pulled off her shoes and carried her into the house toward the stairs to their bedroom.
"Happy Valentine's Day Joel. I love you. Rain check on our celebration? I'll make it up to you, I promise."
"There's nothing to make up for, Reid." Joel replied, softly. "But I wouldn't say no to a dirty weekend."
"Neither would I." Alex mumbled, kissing Joel just before she fell asleep.
