A/N: Here is a short one-shot that I wrote today at work. It's my first songfic, so I hope it is okay. The song is called Million Faces by Paulo Nutini, it's a fantastic song. Spoilers for Boneless Bride in the River.
Disclaimer: I own nothing. Seriously I have no assets, least of all Booth and Brennan! They belong to Fox and Hart Hansen unfortunately!
She stared down at the skeletons of Li Ling Fan and William Chang trying to blink back the tears. She had just told Sully that she wouldn't be going with him and here she was back at the lab where she belonged. It hurt, she was feeling hurt and alone and the only way she knew how to cure that was to work. Even though she had been feeling tired and worn out from work lately, she still loved her job, loved what she did. Sully told her that it was not important enough to be her whole life, but he couldn't understand that this was all she had. It was who she was. She couldn't just let go of that.
Oh a million faces pass my way
Oh they're all the same, nothing seems to change
Every time I look around,
Oh who knows just what the future holds
All I want to know is if it's with you.
Angela had told her to go and a part of her wanted to. While she knew she didn't love Sully, she did have a good time with him. How could she explain that this was more than her job, it was her life. It was all she knew, all she felt comfortable with. She thought about Booth and how he had told her to go too. She didn't know why, but that had hurt her. She thought he would have told her to stay, insisted that she was crazy for wanting to take a year off. He was the only one who knew how she truly felt about her work. He was there for her day after day, side by side in a way Sully could never be.
Tired as hell and falling up the stairs,
filled with a thousand cares as you walked out from the bedroom
Though it feels like my all my fire has gone, you just turn me on,
Can't believe how much I want you
You say you know how I'm feeling, I just need to try to settle down
Oh a million faces pass my way
Oh they're all the same, nothing seems to change
Every time I look around,
Oh who knows just what the future holds
All I want to know is if it's with you.
She looked at the painting Angela had drawn. They looked so happy together. She felt a pang of sadness as she thought that she might never get that. She was just one of those people who didn't get that. But she had thought she didn't get a family either, until Booth reminded her that there was more than one type of family. She thought about Booth and her team and knew he was right. They were her family.
"Bones, what are you doing here?" Booth said, swiping his id and making his way towards her.
'I live here.' She thought to herself. "I work here." She said out loud.
"Well I thought…" he started.
"I'm not going with him." She stated, keeping her eyes focused on the bodies on the table.
"Good." He said softly.
She looked up and saw that he looked relieved.
"I thought you wanted me to go." She said.
He just shrugged and smiled. And in that moment a flicker of hope flashed in both their eyes and she knew that even though it was too soon, one day everything between them would change.
"Wong Foos?" he asked. He smiled and nodded and they headed out together.
We're distracted by the hard times
And the troubles that we make
Let us throw them in the ocean
Let it wash our cares away
Oh the phone you know it never stops
It's the last thing I hear at night
And the first thing in the morning
Oh a million faces pass my wayOh they're all the same, nothing seems to change
Every time I look around,
Oh who knows just what the future holds
All I want to know is if it's with you.
