The Caged Bird: A Twilight Drabble

Author's Note: Hah, still loving James and Vikki. And still morbid. :D

Disclaimer: I don't own Twilight. Or someone would call Victoria "Vikki" and get gutted. Woo!

Most girls her age sang like caged birds, James mused. This one spat like an enraged wildcat.

Victoria Hanley—a name he had discovered on her driver's license, as she glared haughtily at him, her lips pressed firmly together—was a looker, as far as mortals went. She had big brown eyes and hair that was, he imagined, as red as her blood. She had a slender, petite, feminine figure, and long nails that had clawed at him with during every step of her abduction, going for his eyes, his face, what would be the more delicate skin on any human male.

Unaffected, James had dragged her by her wrists as she desperately tried to dig her heels into the deserted sidewalk, and then the earthy ground as he took her from the city alleys into the surrounding forest. That part had been routine—she had dropped every cuss word she knew, insulted his mother, his family, his looks. Now, however, the little redhead was quite stubbornly refusing to follow the script. No matter how he taunted her, threatened her, she refused to speak, to cry, to beg. He had wrapped a slim metal pole tightly around her wrists and ankles, and propped the helpless girl against a tree to face him.

"Do you want to die, little girl?" James inquired softly. "You're just nineteen. You have your whole life ahead of you." Still she was silent. "I could make you scream if I wanted to. Or," he inched closer, until his mouth was next to her ear, "I could give you the world."

"I'm not playing your games," Victoria snapped suddenly, attempting to wrench herself away from him. Unfortunately, all she managed was to tip over, so she was laying on the ground. James spread himself onto the ground next to her to keep her eye-to-eye.

"Feisty, aren't you?" James laughed. "You would die quietly, and that would be boring." She spat at him, but remained otherwise silent. James reached up to wipe the saliva off his face. "Don't worry. I like you, and I have something much better planned." He let out a pleased sigh. "How sweetly the caged bird sings."

They were so far away from civilization that James savored her screams in solitude as the venom dripped through her veins.
