This was originally part of my fanfic SmokeScreen, but I couldn't find a place where it really fit. I think I originally had it in chapter six, but then I took it out and threw it somewhere within my documents :P
So, here it is now :D
Enjoy!

Departure
I walked into the room I shared Mello, only to find the blonde packing his things into a backpack. I shot him a smile, wondering what my friend could possibly be up to.
"Hey, whatchya doin'?"
Mello looked over at me, an intense expression on his face that wiped the smirk from mine.
"They want me to work together with that little bitch Near. I told them no way, so I'm leaving."
"Mello, don't you think you're-"
"I'm not overreacting. I'd rather rot in hell than work with that albino fuck. After I finish packing, I'm out of this shithole."
My eyes widened beneath my goggles as I realized he really was serious. "For chrissakes Mel, I can understand you not working with him or whatever, but running away? Isn't that just a step too far?"
Mello took a bite from a chocolate bar that had previously been hidden in the backpack. "It's more than that. L's dead, and he didn't have time to choose between the two of us, so they wanted both of us to work together on the Kira case. I refused, and now I'm going to solve the case by myself, before he does. I'm going to beat him, once and for all."
"L…L's dead?"
Mello narrowed his eyes and nodded. "I have to do this, Matt. This is my chance to beat Near, and I'm not passing it up. I'm sick of being second to that little fuck. I have to beat him."
I walked closer towards him, desperately trying to think of a way to convince him not to go through with his plan. "You're being an idiot. Where the fuck will you even go? How will you get money, food, shelter, and all that other shit?"
The blonde looked down at the backpack, his grip on the chocolate tightening. "I'll find a way."
I kneeled down next to him, already knowing there was no convincing him to stay. Once Mello had his mind set on something, he did anything to achieve it. I knew that better than anyone.
"Let me come with you."
Mello continued to glare down at the backpack.
"No. I can't. Not now."
I grabbed his shoulders and shook him a little. "Look at me, Mello."
Mello's eyes connected with mine. After a few seconds of glaring at each other, Mello put his hands on my shoulders, pulled me forward, and pressed his lips to mine.
Our lips detached after a few, blissful seconds, leaving me flustered and blushing. Mello stood up, grabbed the backpack, and walked out the door without another word.
I sat there, in awe of what had just happened. Mello had kissed me, fucking kissed me, and walked away. Just like that, I had lost my best friend, the only person I ever cared about.
I stood up and turned towards the door, about to run after him. But then, the terrible truth hit me:
No matter what I said, no matter what I did, it wouldn't have any impact. I wouldn't make any difference.
So I just stood there. It was all I really could do.
