My heart fluttered as I raced down the driveway to get the mail. My college letter was supposed to come today. Momma said that she was proud that I picked to go to the same college as she did. I opened the mailbox to flip through the letters that came today. Bills, Momma's Women's Club newsletter, Dad's letter from Mr. Russell and that was it. No letter today. I walked up the driveway with my head hanging low. Momma ran out to ask me about the letter that didn't come. "Did it come, Delia? Did it?" she screamed at me in joy. I shook my head, hoping that she wouldn't be as disappointed as I was. "Well, honey, there's always tomorrow." She reassured me. "I know, Momma. I just really want to know. I wish they would send a bird to give it to me. That would probably be much faster." I said under my breath. Just when we both thought that today was going to be a pretty bad day, Dad pulled up in his truck. "Attention ladies!" he laughed with an envelope in his hand. He jumped out of the truck and hid the letter behind his back. "Margret, darling, do you think we should give it to her?" he asked Momma. She smiled at him and nodded. Dad turned to me. "I was driving by the post office this morning and Gloria came out to give this to me. She told me to give it to you, but now I'm having second thoughts." He teased. I laughed. "Daddy please!!!" I shouted. "Please what?" he laughed. "Please give me the letter?" I reached out both of my hands. He placed the ivory envelope in the palm of my right hand. I squealed for a moment before tearing it open. As I opened it, I kept my eyes shut. "Please let me in, please!" I whispered to myself. I opened my eyes to read the letter. "Dear Miss. Calhoun," I began to read out loud," As the principal of the "College of Charleston", I am proud to announce that we will enjoy having you as a student next fall!" I shrieked. Momma wrapped me in one of her humongous hugs. "I can't believe it! My little girl is going to the same college as I did!" she cried. I patted the top of her blonde head. "I know Momma, I know." I almost cried myself. As the day went on, found myself putting dinner invitations together for our family members. Dad thought it would be a grand idea if we invited over our family to hear about my school's acceptance letter. It was 7:30 when all the letters were sealed and ready to be sent. There was a knock on the door when I was half way up the stairs, headed for my bedroom for the night. When I opened the door, there stood Susan wearing the same old red dress she wore every time she went out with her boyfriend, Andrew. "Come with me Delia. Andrew and I are going to the diner, there's a new boy in town and he's supposed to be a real charmer." She giggled. I shut the porch door as I stepped out. "I can't." I huffed. She tilted her head which meant I had to give her a reason. "Because, Susan, I need to spend some time with my folks." I pleaded. Susan didn't care. "You can spend time with them tomorrow, because tonight Miss Calhoun, we're going to get you a boyfriend." She grabbed my hand and led me into my own bedroom. I sat on my bed and watched her rummage through my closet. "My brother is going to tell on me." I warned Susan. She glared at me. Noah was my older brother, he was always telling Momma and Dad about when I snuck out. He said it was for my best interest. "Relax, Delia. Noah's out with Allie tonight. Everything is going to be fine." She told me like she was my mother. Susan finally came out with a black halter dress with white polka dots all over it. "Oh, Susan!" I said, getting off of my bed. I took the dress from her and held it up to my body as I looked in the mirror. "It's perfect." She commented. As much as I'd hate to admit it, she was right.
