"What makes it nice is that he thinks he's in love with you too."
The Baroness' words repeated in her head as she walked down the stairs, guitar case and carpet bag in her hands. As she reached the bottom step, she placed the objects on the floor and slowly pulled the letter form her pocket. She paused, looking at it and then slowly mad her way across to the small table she had leant against during her first day at the villa. As she reached the table she stopped again and felt a tear gently make its way down her cheek before it dropped onto the envelope she held in her hand.
"Fraulein Maria?"
"Captain!" Maria turned shocked, wiping the tears from her eyes.
"You're not seriously planning on wearing that to the party are you?" The Captain joked, indicating her hideous grey dress. "Surely you must have something more suitable to wear."
Maria looked at her feet and then glanced at the note. He would learn of her intentions sooner on later.
"What's that?" The captain asked, noticing what she was looking at. He had crossed the hallway before she could even grab at it.
"I'm, I'm not going to the party sir." She stated while continuing to look at the floor. "I-I"
"You've decided to return to the Abbey." He stated having read the note.
"Yes sir. Now if you'll excuse me, your guests will be waiting for you. Goodbye captain." She mumbled before turning and walking towards the door.
"Wait," the captain called after her, following her up the stairs, "Please Maria, you can't just leave like this. We need to discuss this, are you unhappy here?"
"No." she whispered, "Please there's nothing to discuss, I just want to return to the Abbey. I'm sorry sir."
He placed his hand on her arm and gently turned her to face him. In doing so he saw the tears forming in her eyes. He raised his hand to her cheek and brushed them away.
"Please don't leave like this. You haven't even said goodbye to the children." He pleaded.
"I did in the note" she replied.
"That's not the same. Please, just come to dinner and we can talk about this in the morning." The Captain pleaded.
"We'll discuss it tonight sir. I wish to leave first thing in the morning. I'll come to your study after the party has finished." She stated firmly
"Alright, now go and get changed."
"Bu-"
"NO Maria, if this is to be your last night under my roof then I am determined to make sure you will enjoy it. Now off you go."
The Captain ordered.
Maria glared at him, picked up her belongings and ran up the stairs.
"What on earth am I going to wear!" She exclaimed under her breath.
