Vincent watched the festivities from his darkened hotel room. A champagne flute sat on the nightstand beside him. Singing pop stars and fluttering confetti flickered across the television screen.
Another year spent standing still. He saw no reason to celebrate that. He made the same resolution every year, but it was never adequately kept. He could not apologize his way out of his sin.
His thoughts turned again to Lucrecia.
On the nightstand, his cell phone rang. He flipped it open and Shelke's oddly familiar voice answered. "Vincent Valentine."
Despite the futility of the New Year, Vincent caught himself smiling.
