Chapter 1

"BUZZ! BUZZ! BUZZ!" went my morning alarm.

As soon as I heard that, I got up and stretched my arms, yawning away. I made my bed and chose my clothes; I dressed into them and went to have breakfast.

"Morning, Mom," I said as I walked into the kitchen.

"Morning, sweetheart," she said. "You're looking nice today."

"Thanks, what's for breakfast?" I asked.

"How does French Toast sound to you?" she replied, getting the bread out of the cupboard.

"Sounds delicious," I said.

"Okay. I'll make that," she said. "What's the matter, cupcake? You haven't seemed very…on top of it lately, you seem kind of sad."

"What makes you think I'm sad?" I asked.

"Well, these days, when you get home from school, you just say 'Hi!' and got straight to your room, you usually watch TV for a bit and then do your homework at the table," she explained.

"Well…" I started. "The kids at school have been staring at me lately, in a really funny way, usually when I have my new mp3 on."

"That's funny," she said while flipping the toast on the pan. "Don't let them get to you, ignore them, I'm sure not everyone's staring at you. What about Doris and Leo? I'm sure they're not staring at you."

"Dori says exactly what you're saying, and Leo threatens to put anyone who he sees staring at me on 'Hot Seat' and tell the whole school that they're bad, or nerdy or something," I answered.

Doris is Dori's real name; Dori is her nickname.

"Well do what your heart tells you," she said, giving me my French Toast.

"I'd better go, Mom," I said to her, grabbing my backpack after brushing my teeth.

"Alright, have a good day, and I mean it!" she said.

"Okay, Mom," I answered, walking out the door.
