Okay guys, how you doing? I want to welcome you back. If you haven't read the first one, go find that because this won't make any sense to you if you don't. But I really ain't got much to say. I'm glad you guys are back, if you're back. I don't own Percy Jackson, that goes to Rick Riordan and I'd also recommend you'd check out my other story on the sister's grimm. Also, before I forget, this story will mostly be in Raven and Eli's POV with a few others here and there. Here we go ya'll.
Chapter 1: Bloods and Crips
Amber:
"Unbelievable," Lady Artemis ranted "Leave him alone for a few weeks, now he's in jail."
Lady Artemis, Thalia, and myself were headed up to the local juvy to bail Raven out of jail, yeah you read that right. Supposedly he had gotten into a spot of trouble about a week and half before and took off, but they caught him and took him to jail. After a few days, somebody managed to get ahold of Lady Artemis, who then brought the Hunters back to New York so she could come by and get her son, personally. Thalia had received a letter Raven had written and chained to a wild dog who had come up to fence by the yard, giving her special instructions and making it very clear she was not to tell Lady Artemis.
"No," She told Chiron when he offered to do it "Let him sit in there and think about what he's done, maybe that'll put some sense in his head."
I doubted it, he'd been in jail before and it hadn't done anything for him. As far as I could tell the best thing that ever happened to him was finding out he was a demigod, sure he was still what some would call troubled youth but he was much more mature than the fifteen year old Crip that had shown up knowing nothing but drug dealing and gang banging.
We turned the corner onto a street and at the end I saw a big sign. Manhattan Juvenile Detention Center. I could see the fenced in area behind the jail, where the prisoners where in the yard. There were nearly two hundred, playing basketball or just standing around. I couldn't see their faces yet, but it wouldn't have mattered, I wouldn't have been able to spot Raven anyways. We walked through the front door of the center. where parents sat all throughout the waiting room. One was fussing at a twelve year old boy.
"Did you think it was cool?" She scolded him
"I'm sorry, I didn't know what it was." He said
Artemis approached the counter and cleared her throat to get the man's attention. He looked to be in his mid thirties, with a bushy mustache with bits of doughnut stuck in it. He put down the magazine he was reading and looked up as though we had interrupted something very important.
"Can I help you?" He asked in a bored tone
"I'm here for my son." Lady Artemis said
"Name?" He asked
"Raven Alistair." She told him
He typed something on his computer and peered at the screen for a few minutes before frowning and typing in a few more things, he clicked something and wiped the crumbs out of his mustache as he sat up straight, reading from his computer screen.
"Raven Mark Alistair?" He asked "Sixteen, known gang member of the Flat Junction Crips, arrested previously for battery, gang activity, possession with intent to sell, possession of a weapon, armed robbery, arson?"
"That's a lot of charges." Thalia muttered
"This time," He said, scrolling down "He was arrested for underage drinking, possession of marijuana, public intoxication, resisting and evading arrest, assaulting an officer. He was found with a pack of cigarettes, a Ruger, a zippo lighter, two ounces of marijuana, and-"
"I don't care what you caught him with," She hissed "Just take me to him so we can get out of here, male."
He looked taken aback, as though he wasn't used to people talking to him like that, and I suppose he wasn't, but it wasn't a smart idea to stand between a mother and her son, especially when that mother was the angry goddess of the Hunt.
"Bail is three grand." He said
"We already paid the bail." Artemis said, snapping her fingers
"Yeah, that's right, I forgot," He said, going misty eyed "Just follow Officer Davis over there, he'll take you out to the yard.
Officer Davis led us through hallways and down through a cell block. I saw some of the cells still had boys in them. Reading, or working out. As we walked through the cafeteria the guard turned to look at Artemis, he looked as if he had been working up the nerve to speak.
"You really need to do something about your son," He said "I've seen the kid in and out of here quite a few times, he's a good kid, he's just gone down the wrong path."
"Don't tell me how to raise my son," Artemis growled at him "He's changed, much more than you'll every understand, he just still likes to do stupid teenager things."
"Getting hammered drunk in the middle of Central Park and pistol whipping a cop is not stupid teenager things," He told her "It's just-"
"Let me raise my son," She spat "Don't you have some traffic violations to hand out?"
He turned away from her quickly and didn't say anything after that. We stepped out into the prison yard and the boys looked to see what was happening. Several stopped what they were doing but most just went about their business. I saw Raven across the courtyard playing basketball. He stood at about 5'9, and maybe 140 pounds or so. He kept in decent shape for a smoker, building up his upper body and legs from all the exercises he had learned from the Hunters. A personal favorite was free running, just sprinting through the woods, grabbing tree branches and swinging around, hopping from tree to tree, it was fun until you busted your face on a rock.
He had a scar on his left arm that read FJC, and another scar going through his left eye that somehow had not damaged his eyesight. And finally, on his left shoulder blade, a raven shaped brand mark, and bright silver eyes. He had gotten a hair cut a few days after I had last seen him, and he wore only a pair of white jumpsuit pants and tennis shoes. As we watched him someone threw him the ball and he grabbed it and rushed the net. For 5'9 he sure could jump. He dunked the ball and knocked one of the other kids down.
"OOHHHHHH!" Everyone watching the game yelled
Raven offered his hand to the kid and pulled him off of the ground. As we approached I saw him look over and spot us, a grin coming to his face. He nodded to us, well more to Thalia, before turning around and nodding to somebody in the crowd. Moments later, a boy rushed from the crowd and tackled him, causing the two to tumble to the ground and begin a brawl.
Officer Davis pulled his walkie talkie off of his shoulder while several of the other guards began rushing in.
"I got a fight about to break out in the yard. Looks like a gang fight, Crips and twenty fourth street, requesting back up." He said
More boys rushed forward as the two were pulled apart by guards, and angry shouts filled the yard as boys started flooding the basketball court and a full on riot broke out. The guards forced us backwards some as I saw hundreds of boys brawling all over the yard, it was then I noticed that Thalia had disappeared.
"Shit, it's MS-13's, Vice Lords, Latin Kings, everybody is jumping in, get everyone out here." The guard said into his radio
Guards rushed the yard and started hauling boys apart, I saw one grab Raven from behind. He turned, drawing back his fist as he did so and striking the cop hard in the face. The guard fell to the ground, blood gushing from his nose.
"Fuck you, pig." He screamed
He turned back to the fight as a boy with a Vice Lord tattoo jumped on him. More guards rushed out and began separating the boys. Finally after a few minutes the boys were all separated and were being sent back inside. Raven was dragged from the crowd and brought over, in the chaos, Thalia had slipped back in and rejoined us, I didn't know where she had gone, but I had a feeling this wasn't the time to ask.
"Hi, Mom." He said as they threw him in front of us
"We'll talk later," She said, an entire lecture unsaid on her lips "For now, let's just get out of here."
Raven was sporting a black eye and a busted lip. He grinned at me, making him look diabolical with the scar on his eye. We headed back through the way we had come, with Lady Artemis not speaking a single word to Raven as we walked.
"So," He finally spoke "Did ya guys miss me?"
"Not particularly," I said, shaking my head "Your mom is pissed."
"You think?" Thalia whispered as we walked "She had to bring the whole hunt back here to get your ass out of jail."
"What?" He asked shocked "Why didn't you just have Chiron or somebody come and do it?"
"Well he was going to, but Lady Artemis insisted in coming." Thalia said
"Well, damn." Raven said
I don't think he really cared one way or the other. We could've left him in jail to server out the sentence they had handed down, and he wouldn't have changed at all. The only thing he ever seemed to worry about was where he would get weed from or how much he had left, his blood pressure was probably at a record low for Demigods.
"Pigs." He said, spitting blood onto the concrete as we walked
"You're lucky we aren't normal," Lady Artemis scolded, turning to him "You just pulled every trick in the book to keep yourself in there, the mist is the only reason they're letting you walk out."
"It'll make sense here in a minute." Raven shrugged
She rolled her eyes and bit back a scathing retort as we entered the building again. We were taken out to the waiting room where we sat and waited while Raven was given back his clothes and any other personal items. The only things they kept were his weed, cigarettes, gun, and zippo, which left him weaponless, a bad thing for a Demigod.
After a few minutes he emerged from the room wearing a pair of white cargo shorts, an older style Def Leppard t-shirt, his Crooklyn hat, a blue bandana hanging from his back, left pocket, and a worn pair of black Chuck Taylors. We left quickly, wanting to get out as soon as possible. I breathed in the fresh air, something a lot of the kids inside probably wouldn't do for a long time.
"Good to be out of that place, there was a big ass black kid eyeing me like it was lunch time." He said
Normally I'm too mature to laugh at a prison rape joke, but the image of someone trying to do that to Raven in the shower made me crack up. Thalia must've had the same image because she started laughing too. Lady Artemis retained a neutral expression, but I could tell she was suppressing a slight smile.
"Alrighy," He said, clapping his hands "Thalia, did you do the thing?"
"I did the thing." She nodded, reaching inside her pockets
She produced Raven's pack of cigarettes, or at least the kind he smoked, two Ziploc baggies of weed, and his zippo. When he had taken them from her, she reached into her jacket pocket and came out with his Ruger, which he took with glee.
"You're fuckin' amazing, man," He laughed "Never doubted you for a second."
"Wait, what?" I asked
"Did you think that riot just happened to break out?" Raven asked "That kid who jumped me, old friend of mine. We staged the riot so all the guards would be outside and Thalia could slip in and get my shit."
"You," Lady Artemis said suddenly, rounding on Raven "On the other hand, are in serious trouble."
"Serious trouble?" Raven asked, trying for an innocent look "What'd I do?"
"Don't give me that," Lady Artemis spat, getting in his face "Pistol whipping a cop? Really, what's the matter with you."
"I was piss drunk," He shrugged "I like drinking, probably shouldn't do so damn much of it, but I like drinking."
"Just wait until we get back to Camp Half-Blood." She said warningly
"Oh what're you gonna do?" He asked, rolling his eyes "Ground me?"
"Do not think I won't knock you senseless," She said, turning on him again "You won't be the toughest male I've faced down."
"Oh kiss my ass," Raven said, pushing past her "Go run off with the girl scouts and save helpless squirrels or whatever the fuck you do."
Faster than my eyes could even follow, Lady Artemis extended her hand and let a beam of silver light strike Raven in the back. We had made it into the woods by this point, so rather than going forward and hitting the ground, Raven went face first into the trees.
Eli:
I don't know how long I was out, but I was in a lot of pain when I came to. My chest and head were both throbbing, my legs felt like I'd ran five miles (I'm pretty sure I did), and, to make matters worse, a couple of my fingers felt broken. The bed I woke up in, however, was soft and warm, and I almost thought maybe I was back in South Central, until I opened my eyes.
I was in an infirmary of some kind, all around me were kids in purple shirts sporting various types of injuries. A few had black eyes and busted noses, one had an arrow sticking from his calf, another had a gash above his right eye.
"Oh, good you're awake," Somebody said "You've been out for like, two weeks or something."
I turned my head towards the voice, finding a kid a few years older than me, wearing a purple shirt and what I guessed was a set of armor. He had rough features, like he'd seen a fistfight or ten in his day, and he looked like he'd been on the losing end of a recent one. He had a small bruise on his right cheek, a swollen lip, and a cut under his left eye.
"Reyna will want to talk to you as soon as you're up to it," He told me, grinning "The name's Justin, by the way. I'm one of the Centurions for the second cohort, can you tell me your name?"
"Yeah," I groaned, sitting up "Eli Alistair."
"So I take it you've been to Lupa and all that?" He guessed "You don't necessarily seem surprised by what you saw."
"Yep, met Lupa, didn't really care for her too much." I grunted
"Hey woah, man," Justin hissed "Keep your voice down, Lupa's very sacred to the Romans. She can be kinda tough on us, but that's how you make a Roman, tough love and discipline."
"I seen plenty of tough love where I come from, dude." I said, rolling my eyes
"So what's your story?" He asked, grabbing my wrist to check my vitals "Any family?"
"Nah, I was raised in an orphanage down in South Central LA." I shrugged
"Compton," He said, nodding "I figured you were from around there, we've had more than one gang member show up before."
He nodded over to the table beside the bed, where my gun, bandanna, and hat were all waiting for me. It was a little weird bringing them with me, but those three things had been a part of who I was for so long I just couldn't really leave them behind, especially not the hat.
"Bompton to me, but you call it whatever," I told him "Anyways, people running the place were always doped up, didn't ever give a shit about who was where doing what. Found myself hanging out with all the cool kids when I was younger, ended up joining the Bloods."
"So how'd you get here?" Justin asked
"Lupa found me." I said shortly
"Well, yeah, obviously," He said, rolling his eyes "How did she find you?"
"Gunfight broke out," I told him "I got hit, passed out in some alley, woke up to a wolf dragging me away."
"Lucky they found you when they did," Justin nodded, checking my blood pressure "Sounds like you weren't gonna make it."
"I probably wasn't." I agreed
"Well," He shrugged, finishing his check up "You came this far, so I'm assuming you don't want to go back."
"Hell no I don't want to go back," I told him "That place is a shit hole, man. Somebody gets killed everyday out there, I ain't gonna be the next one going out. Besides that, there ain't anything left there for me."
"Good to know, because you may be of far greater importance than you realize," He said, standing up "Feeling up for a walk?"
I nodded and grabbed my stuff from the nightstand, following him outside. My jaw dropped when I saw the place, it was just massive. For miles, it was nothing but old, Roman style buildings, a field way out in the distance. It was scarred with trenches and holes and a few small forts built up, behind us sat another massive city, sprawling out as far as I could see.
"New Rome," Justin nodded "You serve ten years in the legion, you get to retire and live there. You can work, go to college, do whatever you want."
"I don't know about college, but kicking back and living sounds nice," I said as we started walking down towards the camp "So what do you mean by far greater importance?"
"I'd better let Reyna explain," He said "She'll have my ass if I overload you with too much at one time."
We fell silent as we came upon a huge, marble building. I guessed it was this Reyna girl's house or something, it looked impressive to say the least. We went inside, our footsteps echoing around us. Immediately inside, there was a desk with a girl I recognized from the night I had arrived, Reyna. She wore a purple cloak and shirt, that was all I could see, and was flanked on both sides by two dogs, one silver and the other gold.
"Here he is," Justin said, displaying me proudly "Alive and walking."
"Good," She said, rising and coming around the desk "Leave us, Justin. I want to speak with him alone."
Justin nodded and turned away, heading back out the way we had come in. Reyna regarded me coldly, as if sizing up how long it would take her to knock me out, and for all I knew, she was, Romans were temperamental that way.
"Before we get down to business, let me make one thing very clear," She said, indicating to my hat and flag "This isn't whatever hood it is you're from, your gang affiliation holds absolutely no meaning here, leave your colors and all that other stupid bullshit outside this camp. Am I understood?"
I was taken aback for a moment, I wasn't used to being talked to like that, especially not from a girl. Where I had come from, most girls tended to keep to themselves and tried to stay away from the gang members, the rest of them only talked to us if they wanted fucked.
"Yeah," I nodded "Understood."
"Good," She said "Now, I want you to tell me your name and who your parent is."
"Didn't I tell you that already?" I asked her "When I first got here?"
"You were also losing blood and possibly delirious," She shrugged "I'm in charge here, you answer to me as your commanding officer, and I'm asking you to give me your name and godly parentage."
"Eli Alistair," I said, gritting my teeth "Son of Diana."
"Thank you," She said, leaning back against the desk "For that specific reason, nobody other than Justin, me, and the two who carried you in are aware of what you told us."
"Because you thought I was lying?" I asked her
"No, because blood loss can often make a person not in the right state of mind," She said "We are in the midst of a crisis at the moment, what do you know of Roman mythology?"
"Not a damn thing until I met Lupa," I said "Didn't really pick up much from her either, I know my mother is the goddess of the Hunt."
"Did she also tell you that she was a maiden goddess?" Reyna asked "Did she tell you about her vow against having kids?"
"No, guess that slipped her mind," I shrugged "So that means I don't have any brothers or sisters here?"
"Well, see that's where our little crisis comes in," Reyna told me "About a month ago, a guy named Raven showed up at Camp Half-Blood, the Greek demigod camp."
"Greek?" I asked, confused
She gave me a quick rundown of what had happened during the Civil War, why the camps had been separated. What had happened earlier on in the year with Gaea and the Giants, what had transpired in the last few weeks with my supposed brother I had never met. When she finished, she paused, as if waiting for me to say something. I wasn't quite sure what to say, even though I'd been at this for a little bit, I still felt like it wasn't real, I just didn't know what to think anymore.
"So then my mother broke her vow twice?" I asked, confused
"Actually no," Reyna said "A few days ago, I had Jason Grace, our Auger, come by the camp. I told him what happened and swore him to secrecy, he then went to go see you and said you were nearly identical to Raven, I think the two of you are twins."
"No shit?" I asked, raising my eyebrows "So you still ain't told me what this crisis you're having is."
"I don't think two sons from the goddess of the hunt just show up and everything will be fine and dandy," She said, narrowing her eyes "I've been around far too long, Eli. Your arrival here is an omen, perhaps of grave things to come."
"Oh," I managed, kind of caught off guard "Well yeah, guess that's a shitty week, huh?"
"Put simply, yes," She told me "You will be allowed to stay at my camp, but you will be loyal to the twelfth legion, you will not cause trouble whatsoever, and you will follow the orders of your superior officers to the letter, got it?"
"Anywhere's better than Bompton, I guess," I sighed "You got it, I do have to make one request though."
"What?" She asked, narrowing her eyes again, giving me a look that made me feel tiny
"We're a camp full of teenagers, pretty much," I shrugged "I like to do teenager shit, party and drink and whatnot, am I still cool?"
"What?" She asked, taken aback "No, you can't just go around throwing parties."
"Oh give me a break," I said, rolling my eyes "I've seen some movies or two in my day, Romans love to party, ya'll have parties here all the time, guarantee it, and I'm calling bullshit if you're trying to tell me nobody is drinking or sneaking off to smoke weed."
Reyna opened her mouth to say something, but stopped, thinking about what I had said. I knew I was right, you couldn't put this many teenagers together and tell me some of them didn't like to party, I don't care where the hell they were raised. She finally sighed, realizing I had her.
"I guess I can't deny that," She shrugged "I like having a drink or two every now and then, calms the nerves I suppose, just don't be making a fool of yourself and doing something stupid."
"I can live with that," I told her "So what's next then?"
"When we return you'll report to Justin, on probatio with the second cohort," She told me "But first, you and I are going to Camp Half-Blood, I want to speak to Chiron about my concerns."
Raven:
We sat in the Big House, waiting. Jason had called us in to have a meeting, Thalia, my mother, Chiron, Rachel, Percy, and I, Jello had followed us and was lying at my feet. I figured it was going to be something about a joint thing with the two camps, but instead he just went for the kill and blew my fucking mind.
"A twin brother?" I asked, my mouth dropping open before I turned to my mother "When did you plan on saying something?"
"I separated the two of you at birth," She said coldly "I didn't want you sparking eachother's powers too early, I wanted to keep you away from all of this as long as I could."
There was a bit of tension between us, as the both of us still wore wounds from our battle earlier. After I hit the tree I got up and turned around, throwing a ball of silver light at her. She knocked it away and told Amber and Thalia to go ahead, that the two of us had things to work out. I took that to mean I was about to get the shit kicked out of me, but I wasn't going to back down, Mom didn't care for weakness in her Hunt, and I wasn't going to just lie down and take it.
I had managed to get her a few times, leaving a small bruise on her left cheek. I, on the other hand, took the worse end. I was sporting a black eye, a busted lip, a gash on my chin, and she knocked out my front tooth. Nobody asked what happened, in fact everybody seemed to be avoiding the subject all together, acting as if the two of us weren't even bearing any wounds.
"Reyna should be here in a minute," Jason told us "There's a boat, one only the Praetors know of. It travels extremely fast, and can take you from one end of the country to another in about an hour."
"Really?" Percy asked, dropping his chair back on all fours "Why the hell did nobody tell Hazel, Frank, and I about that when we went to freakin' Alaska?"
"Well, by legion rules only Praetors or somebody in the company of one are allowed to use it," Jason shrugged "Plus, Reyna's weird. Something about Romans proving their worth and all that."
Before Percy could respond, Nico walked into the room, a weird look on his face. He looked at me and then looked back out the door at something in the distance, then he turned back to me, an even more puzzled look on his face.
"Dude, Reyna just showed up in a boat with some kid that looks just like you," He said in amazement "Seriously, spitting image, just no scar."
"They're here?" Chiron asked "Go get them, bring them too us at once."
Nico nodded and ran back outside, returning less than twenty seconds later with Reyna behind him. As they stepped through, I noticed a red snapback coming in behind them. On the front of it was the old LA Dodgers logo, except the bottom of the L was an AK-47. Pretty cool hat, I can admit, even if it isn't my color, but I definitely wasn't prepared for the dude wearing it.
Nico was right, it was almost like looking into a mirror. He was just a little taller than me, and his face had a more Roman look to it, regal is the word I'm looking for I suppose. I noticed his bright, silver eyes and the short cut auburn hair poking out of the back of his hat. He had no scar on his eye, but he had a small scar on the right side of his jawline, it looked like something that would be left if you got punched by somebody wearing a ring.
Damn, the tension was thick. He and I met eachother's eyes, each raising our eyebrows at one another before both turning to our mother. He didn't seem sure of what to say, the same way I was at first, he probably didn't know if he wanted to be angry or happy to meet his long lost family. I figured it was a good time to break the ice.
"Well," I began, looking at my mother "Care to explain why 'the only son of Artemis' is looking at his twin brother?"
"Don't you start with me," She told me, shooting me a glare before her face softened "Ugh, I suppose I do have a bit of explaining to do, don't I?"
"That's one way of putting it." Other me said, nodding in agreement
His voice was a bit gruffer than mine was, like he'd hit puberty long ago and had pretty much already gotten through it. I, being what Free used to jokingly call a little late off the starting line, still had to bust the occasional camper in the mouth for making fun of my voice cracking, I only had to do it once or twice before the others got the memo. Sure, some kind of saw me as a bully but the way I see it is if we're not friends you have no business giving me any shit.
"I suppose it's time." She said, looking to Chiron
"This would probably be the best time to bring it up," He agreed "Yes."
"I knew it," Percy said suddenly, pointing to Nico "I told you he knew something and was sworn on the River Styx not to tell anybody, back when this whole thing first started."
"Congratulations, Captain Obvious," I said, rolling my eyes "I can tell those AP classes Annabeth is making you take are really paying off."
"I'll be damned," Other me said, looking to Reyna "Guess you weren't just bullshitting me?"
"I never do," She shrugged "Now what exactly are we bringing up?"
"Well first of all," She said "Raven, this is your brother, Eli."
"Long time no see." I said sarcastically
"Got lost in the store," He shrugged "Kind of a Joe Dirt type of story."
"I like this guy," I laughed "Alright, Mom, continue."
