Waiting

Waiting. It was a word that Temperance Brennan had come to hate. As a teenager she had spent many years waiting for her parents to come home. As she grew into adulthood she gradually got used to the idea that they were never going to return but she couldn't stop looking. Every spare second was spent pouring through files and her personal memories of that hectic time. But then something happened that Temperance did not expect. The day that she first laid eyes on Special Agent Seeley Booth. He was handsome and knew it too. He was brave, courageous even. He didn't even seem to mind her work or obsession with dead people which was a definite plus in her book.

They weren't lovers; would never be. They were friends and nothing more. Although sometimes she secretly longed to be and had a sneaking suspicion that Booth would like to be too. But they had kept their relationship professional for many years and probably would have if it hadn't been for what Angela liked to call 'The Day'. It was the day that Temperance and Booth had an argument. That wasn't unusual; they fought on a regular basis and enjoyed it. But the fight had gone sour. Booth had been in a bad mood for some strange reason and Temperance decided that it would be a good idea for her to tease him about it. Bad idea. Booth had gotten mad over some innocent comment that she had made and stormed out of the lab; slamming the doors behind him. Then Zach had come in, saying that Booth had taken off, tires squealing.

Temperance dismissed it; saying that he was just upset and would be back in a couple of hours, acting like nothing had happened. After waiting all night for him to come back she reluctantly went home and slept. She arrived the next morning, expecting to find him sitting in the lab with two coffees and donuts. He wasn't there. Two days later he still wasn't there. Two weeks; he still hadn't shown. Two months; he was listed as missing and placed on the back burner. The team insisted that she forget about him; Booth was probably out there lying on a beach in Jamaica with a beautiful blonde lawyer lying next to him. Temperance didn't believe that; Booth just wouldn't take off leaving all of them hanging. He would have at least contacted her if only so she wouldn't worry.

But she smiled and helped the F.B.I. pack up his office and took the box home; placing it in her attic next to the boxes that had belonged to her parents. The pictures that she had of him were removed from their various places in her home and packed up; all except for two. One of them was of the two of them bending over a skeleton which she placed on her desk at work. The other was simply of Booth sitting in his office, legs propped on the desk as his brow furrowed in concentration. It went on the nightstand next to her bed which she looked at every night. She added his files to the stack where her parents were and spent her every free second pouring over them. A new F.B.I. liaison worked with them; bringing them bodies to study and leaving them at the lab. There were no favors, no friendly dinners or drinks after a rough day. She didn't like the new agent but tolerated him merely because, now that she was no longer allowed in the field, she had more free time to search for Booth. Because he was her friend; because he would never let her disappear without finding her. Because…because she loved him. Because she wanted to tell him that; because she wanted to kiss him with all her might and never let go.

Because she loved Booth she would wait for him. And she would never stop searching. She would wait for him for all eternity.

A/N: I apologize if this isn't very good; I just started watching Bones tonight and came up with this idea ten minutes ago. Literally. Let me know what you think and if you guys want a sequel with Temperance finding Booth. Let me know what you want to happen!
