Two Plus Two Equal One

They thought he was stupid. They laughed at him. Some even looked at him sympathetically .He did not get it. What was wrong with his answer? Of course, they were pulling his legs or maybe….Hmm... That was it – they were just plain jealous! Yep, no doubt they were jealous and angry and mean, and of course stupid if they could not understand simple Math. Two Plus two equaled one – it was that simple.

Every time Dean thought maybe he was wrong, he would glance at Sammy… his dear little Sammy. Sammy - with his dancing eyes, cherubic smile, chubby cheeks and soft brown baby curls. When Sammy smiled, Dean had to smile too. If Sammy cried, somehow Dean cried along. When smile fell ill, Dean started feeling yucky too. If Sammy couldn't sleep, Dean couldn't sleep either. If Sammy woke up from his nap, Dean woke up too, not Daddy. Of course, Daddy always cried himself to sleep with that yucky-smelling bottle. Well, that's how it was. Dean knew his Sammy was a part of him, even though he was pretty small and sometimes smelled awful. He was still Dean's – Sammy was Mommy's special gift to Dean. So Dean knew they were actually one, even though they were two – that's what Mommy had told him. It was their secret.

Dean smiled. Yes, no matter what they said, he knew Mommy had told him the real truth. Dean's Mommy was very clever. Even Daddy said so. So when the mean people made fun of him, Dean would think of Sammy and smile back at them with pity. Oh, how they wish they knew! Of course, he won't tell them their brilliant secret- serves them right for being mean to him! So, no matter what his teachers and others said, Dean knew and believed that two plus two equaled one – Mommy had taught him that when she had given Sammy to him. Yes, he let the poor people believe what they wanted to but Dean knew the truth. Every time he doubted it, he remembered Sammy and thanked Mommy for letting him in on the secret. Yes, Dean was smart.
