It was late when Patsy got back in from her disaster of a night with Delia but that didn't stop her from quietly removing her keepsake box from under the bed to lay eyes on the one thing she thought might make Delia feel that they were more real, less ghostlike.
A ring.
Her mother's ring.
A row of rubies set into delicate gold. When her father presented it to her on her 18th birthday, he asked if she remembered helping to pick it out. She did not. She had become distraught at the thought that she had so few memories of her early years. The free and easy ones before the war came. Her father refused to acknowledge the distraught look in her eyes (as he often did) and continued with his story.
Her mother was in labour with Patsy's younger sister, it had already been many hours and was likely to be a good few more. He had been asked to keep Patsy out the way so had taken her into town. He was worried about his wife and wanted to get her something to show her how proud he was of her, this miracle she was part of. He let Patsy in on his plan and soon she was dragging him into every shop at a rate of knots. She came to a standstill all of a sudden outside a jewellers and pointed at the ring. Looking up from where a small Patsy stood he saw there was a sign in the window saying "show your loved ones you love them eternally with an eternity ring".
So that was it an eternity ring from her father to her mother passed down to her and now she wished to promise Delia an eternity and it was the perfect way to do it.
Author Notes
At least one more chapter to come with Delia receiving the ring.
I know the ring on Delia's necklace doesn't have rubies in the show but my mum has an eternity ring that my dad and sister got her just after she had me so I thought I'd be nice to put it in this story
