"Katara!" she could hear her brothers excited voice from across the campsite. "We just got a letter, it's from dad!"
"That's great!" she said in reply. But in reality she couldn't care less. She didn't particularly care for her father that much. In fact she loathed him, she absolutely despised her father.
It all started when she was just a young girl at the fresh age of eight. She and her brother Sokka were playing outside in the snow when she heard indistinct sounds coming from within their house. Curiosity got the best of her and she inched slowly towards the house to find out what was going on. Never in her eight-year old life would she be prepared for what she was about to hear.
"I hate you!" "You're never there when we need you" she heard from a female voice she immediately recognized as her mother. "It's always hunting trip this, Fire Nation that." "Don't you ever think about your family?" her mother added angrily.
"How dare you say such things!" she heard a loud booming voice interrupt her mother which she immediately recognized as her father. "I do these things to provide for and protect my family!" her father said in an almost noble sort of way.
"Funny, you should be one to talk about protecting us from Fire Nation." her mother said in a mocking tone.
"And what does that mean exactly?" her father replied
"Well seeing as you are Fire Nation yourself!" her mother snapped back.
At hearing this Katara was immediately taken back. Her father was fire nation? Did no one know? Where they hiding this from her? These thoughts flooded the mind of the young waterbender as she continued to listen.
"Listen here woman!" "I might have been born there but do not ever compare me to those barbarians!"
"Listen to you rambling about..." suddenly her mother was cut off and all she heard now were muffled screams coming out of their tent. Soon they were replaced by different sorts of screams. Screams that she would often hear if she woke during the later parts of the evening. But they were different. In a way they were angrier and way more painful.
She went back to her older brother trying to forget all that she had heard. As she went closer she could swear that even the snow itself was blackening from the sadness and confusion she was experiencing right now.
"Hey Katara look, black snow!" her brother said as he stuck out his tongue nearly gagging afterwards. "Eeeew! tastes bad."
Katara was feeling a little grateful. She saw this as a sign of sorrow from the spirits, sharing her grief.
Meanwhile Hakoda, half naked and a little bruised looked out his tent and new this sign a little too well.
"Soot." he said cryptically.
