Kagome rolled over from her previous position on the bed.
It had been three long days.
Three days since she had seen him.
Kagome wondered what was going through his head. Inuyasha wasn't one to be this patient… unless something was really bothering him.
Or he was with her.
That was probably it. That explained why he hadn't come through the well yet. Kagome heaved a small, yet resigned sigh. She was used to this. Sometimes she wondered why she still bothered to get upset over it. After all, it wasn't as if he promised her anything. Just his protection.
But never his love.
She began to wonder if she would ever stop loving him. Or even, if soon, she would start to regret the fact that she loved him.
She hoped not.
Her thoughts drifted back to the Sengoku Jidai. What were they doing? Was he indeed with her?
Would he ever decide who he wanted more?
Kagome held no delusions about her situation. She knew that if Inuyasha had to decide between them tomorrow, Kikyou would inevitably come out the winner. Kagome had never felt (or had never been made to feel) even half as good as Kikyou. Hell, he'd probably be smiling as she dragged him with her to Hades.
But then again... she could understand his indecision. On one hand, he had his first love, the first one who (besides his mother) accepted him, (albeit not unconditionally, but anyway) and his first real shot at a life where he would have been "normal". In many ways, Kikyou and Inuyasha were alike; both undeniably different and both alienated from the races from which they came.
And then he had her. Higurashi Kagome. The girl from five centuries into the future, who came from a world where youkai didn't exist and women were not called bitches or wenches but exactly that: women. A girl who just happened to be the exact image of his first love. Every time Inuyasha looked at her, Kagome could see the question in his eyes. It was almost as if he forgot that Kikyou and Kagome were two completely different people.
But then, there were times when everything was so perfect between them. When the spider demon had attached and he had said those four words ("I like your scent"), her heart had beaten triple-time and she was speechless. But it had felt so good. Those were the times she wanted to forget. As crazy as it sounded, Kagome would rather have had all the bad memories; at least then, she could have hated him or they could have remained strictly "business partners" who worked together to achieve the same goal. But no. Inuyasha just had to let that good part of him, his self-proclaimed "weak" part out to shine. It made it so much harder to get over him.
"Oi wench! Get moving, we've got shards to hunt!"
At that yell, she allowed a smile to touch her face.
" Coming Inuyasha! You don't have to yell, you know…"
The rest of her thoughts could wait. Right now she had something to do. And someone to be with.
