"Why are raindrops clear, Seimei?" Ritsuka's large violet orbs took in the leaves from the tree canopy above both him and his brother.
"Because." Answered Seimei, noncommittally. His eyes remained closed, his face blank and uninterested. The wind ruffled the tall grass in the field around them, a single stalk dangling from the older cat's lips. It was a late summer afternoon and they had nowhere to be except where they were.
Seimei's brother rolled over, head resting on his bent arm. Ritsuka poked his older brother in the chest. Seimei's eyes opened to slits and he huffed angrily.
"What, brat?" he growled, trying to be menacing. Ritsuka just giggled.
"Why are they clear?" He rested his chin on Seimei's chest, staring at him with large, wide eyes.
Seimei sighed deeply and rested his hand on his brother's head.
"Will you let me rest if I tell you?" He felt Ritsuka nod against his abdomen.
"Fine." Seimei paused for a moment, trying to think of something to tell the younger boy that would satisfy his curiosity. He grunted slightly, shifting so his brother was resting warmly over his heart. Ritsuka stared up at him through his bangs, waiting.
"Ok, so why are raindrops clear? You know how you saw that story about that little girl who had died and it made you sad? Because she hadn't been much younger then you? Well, when little kids die too early and go up to heaven, they like to check on us now and then. Raindrops are clear because, when they look down and see what's happening to us, they get very sad. Raindrops are their tears, they're crying because we don't have as good a life as they do."
Ritsuka's eyes closed contentedly.
"That was a good one, I like that." Seimei's chest vibrated under his head as his older brother laughed.
"I love you sweetie."
"I love you too, Seimei."
The brothers rested a bit more, enjoying the warm breeze and the scent of the sun-dried grass. After a while, Seimei felt his brother shift and he sighed. Here it came.
"Seimei?"
"Yes Ritsuka?" asked his brother, exasperated.
"Why is it every time your friend Soubi comes over you two spend all afternoon in your bedroom making funny noises?"
Seimei's eyes flew open.
