Drabble Challenge #13 (from THP yahoo group)
8 May, 2005: Mother's Day
Inspiration -- Mothers: We all have them.
Note: These are two 100 word drabbles in response to the above challenge.
#1
It's Mother's Day today and Sam and I are taking Cassie out for the day.
Cassie wants to go to the cemetery, so we go there first.
As we stand by Janet's grave, I can see in the sad looks Sam gives her that she's remembering what it was like to lose her own mother and I try not to think about how I felt when I lost mine. It hurts me to think the three of us have this in common.
So we try to make the best of today and make it something special, something just for us.
#2
I spent too many years wishing that someone would choose me to be their son until I realized wishes don't come true.
It took me many more years before it occurred to me that maybe I could choose for myself
I stare at the house and wonder if she's home.
I take a deep breath, holding the flowers tight in my hand and fix my tie.
I walk up and ring the doorbell. She answers it with a pleased look on her face and I know I've done the right thing.
I smile and tell her, "Happy Mother's Day, Catherine."
