4 – Boo Radley
5/28/2008
My name is Arthur Radley, I'm thirty-five, and I just saved two kids from getting killed last night.
First thing I remember was that there was a man wearin' a hat and carryin' a knife. He was holdin' onto a boy of about eight or nine and was wrestling around with him. Since he was carryin' the knife, I thought that he was aimin' on killin' the boy. So I rushed in and wrestled the boy out of the man's grasp and tossed him into a pile of leaves nearby.
By the time I looked back from the boy in the pile of leaves to the man, he was grabbin' onto a plastic thing, which ended up being the other child, a girl, but then I rushed over and got the man's grasp off of the girl and pushed her up against a nearby tree, then started fighting the man.
After a minute, I ended up killing the man. I grabbed the boy and carried him back to his house. I spoke to no one, but his father (I assumed) assumed that somehow he'd been hurt.
I heard someone else coming, so I hid behind the boy's door and stayed there for about five minutes until the little girl noticed me and said that I might be able to say something about it. I stepped out into the light, staring at her, as her father introduced me. He and another man left us alone with the boy, and she let me pet his hair, and then led me outside to the porch.
We were on the swing on the front porch as we listened to the judge and the children's father were talking about having a trial about me killing the man, but the Judge didn't want to bring me into the limelight by having the trial, so he decided that the man "fell on his own knife" to cover up the death.
The Judge left, then the girl walked over to her father and said that making me go through with the trial was like "killing a mockingbird." Her father left the two of us on the porch after their conversation was over, and she walked me home.
I will forever remember that night because the girl was so nice to me, so innocent. I hope she stays that way, too.
