I was in my favorite café waiting for my ex girlfriend. She had promised to come when I asked her after class, and I was hoping that she would want to get back together, as I did. But she was late… an hour late. I hoped it didn't have anything to do with our classmate, the one I saw her talking with before class.

I looked out the window, hoping to distract myself. People passed by, parents with their children, couples holding hands, and one girl by herself. She was pretty cute. I watched her cross the street and head toward the café. All of a sudden, though, tears welled up in her eyes and streamed down her cheeks. She stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and looked toward the sky, as if her soul had been taken away and she was watching its escape. I paid my bill and went outside. She was still there, tears flowing freely and eyes fixed on the clouds above.

"Excuse me Miss… are you okay?" I asked, not wanting to be rude.

Her eyes riveted on mine. "I'm alone," she whispered, and suddenly I was crushed in a hug, her tears now on my sleeve. People passing by muttered at our social faux pas, wondering if I was breaking her heart or if I'd cheated on her. I began to pull away, but she was sobbing, so instead I put my arms around her.

"It's all right," I murmured, patting her head. "Everything will be fine."

She suddenly jerked away and looked at me as if I'd come out of thin air. Her tears stopped abruptly and, face flushed, she began to bow and apologize. "Excuse me, I'm sorry…" she said, and began to back away from me. "Please forgive me…" When she was about ten feet away, she stopped and looked me in the eye. "Thank you."

And then she was gone.
