Lyrics: Fire Escape by Half Moon Run

Hey, dark eyes
Rest with me a while as I drift closer to sleep
But still cannot
Still cannot find no peace

It feels like a cliché, but he cries at night.

In his sleep, when the barracks are calm and quiet, when the walls are the only ones to hear him break, when he doesn't even know it.

When he is oblivious to the world and his tears, she is not.

She is always awake, always listening, her step light and her eyes bright as she slips into his room. Her toes are at their tips as she shuts the door in the same practiced manner, able to find his bed without needing light.

It varies, the way he tosses, the way he turns, the way he softly whimpers in his sleep. Sometimes she knows it is nightmares, other times complete terrors that send thread apart, pillows across the room; one time, he had even hurled his bedside table across the room, into the wall. He'd hit her twice in this brief little charade they pulled, hating each other outside, comforting each other on the inside. Its the only time they feel comfortable around each other, where there is no struggle for power, where neither has anything to prove.

Where they can just fall in love, over and over again.

Because he can let down his guard, and she can lose her snark, and they can hold each other, fight the dark together.
