Not as planned
Katara glanced up. The thrumming sound of an airship engine was filling the air. She looked around wildly. Surely it couldn't be the Fire Nation. Surely they couldn't have⦠she shook her head. But then an extremely battered Fire Nation ship landed in front of them, and her eyes began to cloud. Zuko attempted to stand up, but fell back down again, his fists clenched. Katara pursed her lips and glared wetly at the people getting out of the airship. That is, until she realised that they weren't wearing Fire Nation uniforms. She ran over to them, her eyes clear and her mouth open.
"You guys are okay! You're all okay! You're all-" she frowned.
"Where's Aang?"
"He's-"
"Where. Is. Aang" she said in a deadly calm voice. But Sokka was smiling.
"He's just over there" he said, pointing behind him. She looked over Sokka's shoulder wildly, and there he was. The only clothes he had left were a tattered pair of shorts. He was dirty, covered in soot and minor injuries. He had never looked better. She pushed Toph to the side, and ran up to him, her eyes rapidly filling with tears.
"Hey-" he started, but he was silenced as a distraught and emotional Katara charged into him and threw her arms around his neck, unbalancing him and sending them both tumbling onto the ground. She started crying.
"Hey, Katara, it's okay" he said softly, stroking her hair. She just sobbed into his shoulder, feeling his comforting arms around her and his breath blowing her hair. She distantly heard Sokka say
"Thank goodness Aang's so calm. If a woman like that was running at me, I would have turned on my heel and gotten out of there as fast as I could. Notice I said heel, because I hurt my leg" he finished, looking around for some more sympathy. No one was paying him any attention. Aang stood up, gently pulling Katara to her feet, still tangled up in her embrace. She looked at him, her tear stained face full of unreadable emotions. Then she leaned forward and placed her lips hesitantly on his. It only lasted a second, but that was long enough to render him breathless, long enough to open Sokka's mouth in shock and long enough to make Toph shake her head, smiling at the ground. Katara grinned at Aang, who was still looking around, maybe for his breath. It hadn't been planned, it didn't mean that she wasn't confused, but it was certainly worth it.
