Thundering

A frantic knock danced on the door.

"Comin'!" the voice inside called, tugging on a pair of jeans and answering the knock.

Just below his eye-level, a 14-year-old Noodle trembled, rivers of tears streaming from behind her thick purple bangs. Behind the window, a growl of thunder roared at the challenge of the flamboyant lightning, making Noodle cry out in fear, her arms crisscrossing her chest tight.

"Aww, Noodle, s'okay, jus' a li'l thunda'!" he told her gently. It was becoming more like a line in a play, it's what he said every time a storm pulled in, year after year.

"H-Hai…" thunder crashed, lightning flashed, silhouetting the girl, "EEP!"

Gently, he bent down to her level, lifting her in his arms "S'awrigh', love, I got'cha. An' here I fough' yew sai' yew were gonna be awlrigh' a' suppa'."

"Damon and Jamie were there… I did not want them to know that I am afraid of something as silly as thunder."

"S'no' silly, love! Plen'y a' people a'e sca'ed a' thunda n' ligh'n! Anyways, s'wha', the only fing yo're scared of?"

"You know that is not true, 2D-kun."

He smiled, "I know, love, bu' i' migh' as well be true. You're a strong woman, an' yew don' let noffink push yew 'round, no' even Murdoc. Some'ow, thunda' should be the last a' your worries, yeah?"

"2D-kun, gomen… please don't say anything for right now, okay?"

"Awlrigh', love. Wha'eva' you want."

FIVE YEARS LATER

He could tell it was raining. He could hear the raindrops falling to their fate against the surface of the water above. Most exciting thing he'd heard all day.

That's when he'd heard the crashing, not thunder, but something happening in the lift. The thunder was muffled by the water; this was right outside the door.

Standing he opened it. It was probably night right now, it was dark in his room and dark out here in the hallway.

"'Ello?" he called out.

No answer.

Walking towards the lift, he saw it- saw her. Huddled into the curve of the cylindrical room was a girl, tall and lanky, a huge weapon in her lap and a massive oni mask covering her face, tufts of purple hair growing around her temples. When more thunder crashed along the sea and reverberated below, the girl cried out, her knees drawing closer into her.

"S'okay, Noodle" 2D said, his voice barely above a whisper, "Jus' a li'l thunda'."
