Summary: James and Lily have a short argument while sitting by the lake.

A Bird of Distractions

"Lily?"

"Yeah James?"

"Never mind."

"What?"

"Nothing."

"What?"

"Nothing. Look at that bird up there, Lils. Isn't it a pretty color?"

"James, stop avoiding the subject."

"What subject? Look, it's looking at you. I think it likes your hair."

"James?"

"It's nothing, Lily. Look, I swear it's looking right at you."

Lily glanced up at the bird in the tree whose shadow fell on the lake, rippled because of the water. It, in fact, was looking at her, but she payed no more attention to it.

She sighed, looking back at James.

"Potter, what were you going to say?" She now had her arms crossed and was shooting him a stern look. James, not phased, continued to look at the water.

"I was going to ask if you thought Sirius would want to play Quidditch with me later," James replied with a mischievous grin.

"You're such a liar." Lily picked up a pebble and threw it into the water.

"No, really. Oh, look, Lils. The bird has a friend."

Lily looked up, once again, at the bird and it indeed had a yellow friend perched next to it on the branch.

"James, come on. Tell me."

"It's nothing, really. Charms homework, I swear."

Lily rolled her eyes. "And my middle name is Ophelia."

"Lily Ophelia? That's rather unfortunate..."

Lily rolled her eyes.

"You're so stubborn," she said, feeling around on the ground for another pebble, this one to aim at James's head and not the lake.

"You're one to talk."

"I am not stubborn."

James couldn't repress a laugh.

"Oh, yes you are."

"I am not. I'm offended, James Potter."

"Or just ignorant."

"Ignorant?" she scoffed. "At least I'm not pig-headed."

James laughed. "I'm not anymore, love, now am I?"

Lily glared but remained silent.

"Hey, Lily?"

"Yeah?"

"You want to know what I really was going to ask?"

"No."

"What?"

"I'm just kidding." She smirked a little.

"Oh." James chuckled. "I was going to ask why people fall in love."

"Oh?"

"Yeah, but then I looked at you and remembered," he answered sheepishly.

Lily stayed quiet for a moment.

"James?"

"Yeah?"

"That was really cheesy."

A/n: Alright, this was a quick little one shot I wrote when I found myself opening a new document. Completely spur of the moment and rather short. I hope you liked it, I mean, I thought it was cute. Reviews make my day.

Much love,
