What hurts the most
What hurts the most wass being so close.
And having so much to say and watching you walk away.
And never knowing, what could have been
And not see that loving you is what I was trying to do
What hurts the most-Rascal Flatts
That was it. Voyager's 7-year travel had come to an end and now, the crew would go their own way, some would stay in the Starfleet, others would focus on their families.
And Chakotay, seeing Janeway looking at the screen of the bridge for one last time, her hands behind her back, the commander realized that this had been the last time he had served under her command, they would go to separate ways and he had left many things unsaid between them.
He lifted his hand, as if he wanted to move closer to her and touch her shoulder, but he gave up, because there was no reason for him to tell her of his feelings anymore, now that he was with Seven. And he realized that this new relationship had started too fast.
"Chakotay..." Janeway murmured, turning to him with a small smile, her face being illuminated by the lights of the other ships approaching Voyager there at the station.
There was so much she wanted to tell him, thank him for always being by her side, even when she had been impossible, to say that she loved him and that she was ready for a relationship with him, but now, with Seven, she just stretched her hand toward him and said sincerely, her blue eyes shining
"Thanks for everything."
And Chakotay smiled, though his heart squeezed and then he reached out his hand, squeezing hers and stroking the back of her delicate hand with his thumb, seeing her smile and then, he said, his voice husky and sincere:
"Thank you for allowing me to be by your side, Kathryn."
And he clasped their hands together for a moment, seeing that they fit perfectly, but without taking her eyes off her face, seeing the captain's beautiful smile, who felt the warmth of his touch rise up her arm and then to her face.
And Kathryn released her hand, touching his shoulder one last time, making him shiver with her delicate yet remarkable touch before she walked toward the doors and Chakoray sighed, watching her go with so many unfinished things between them.
