A Silent Vow

Molly Weasley anxiously lent over the sink and peered into the darkening sky, before fear over took her and she jerked the curtains close.

The sudden movement caused a sharp pain to shoot down her back. Massaging the spot, she cast anxious glance at her clock. It had been Arthur's idea, when she had cried into his shoulder that she was so afraid for him and the children when they were not within eyesight.

Arthur's hand stayed stubbornly on 'work'. She sighed, setting the pots and pans washing, she grasped her back again. It had been a long day for Molly. She should be used to it by now, with six boys and another baby on its way.

Some people criticised Arthur and her, saying that they could not have picked more inopportune time to have children. She sighed, a little part of her agreed. Her children were not planned, but when she found she was pregnant, each time, the joy over took the fear. For most of the time at least...

She glanced at the shut curtains and gave them another nervous tug. Even purebloods were not safe at a time like this. She thought of her kind, sweet husband with his fascination with muggles and wondered if she didn't love him so much, would she hate him?

'Mummy', little Percy interrupted her thoughts from the kitchen doorway, 'come with me!'

Grabbing her hand, he forceed her into the living room, where all six of her boys had gathered.

'We are going to look after you' Percy announced, and pushed her towards the couch. She started to protest, but they stamped their feet in anger and she fell silent with a bemused smile.

As she sat, Fred made a rude noise and Charlie clapped him around the head, though George snickered appreciatively. Percy pulled up the foot stool, which she gratefully put her feet upon. Scanning their heads, she started at the realisation that Bill was not in the room, but the clock comforted her, he was still in the house.

Charlie struggled up to her and dumped baby Ron on her lap, where he instantly cuddled into her. Bill, safely, returned to the living room, carefully holding a teacup which he placed next to her.

'The Weasley Brothers' Productions are proud to present 'Babbity Rabbity and her Cackling Stump', Bill announced importantly. She chuckled as she watched them act out the story of the foolish king, a cunning charlatan and clever witch.

Bill read out the story from the tattered copy of Beedle the Bard, 'The King shouted nonsense into the sky!', Fred let out a hoot and jumped up, waving a toy wand. Percy, who was playing the King, immediately complained that Fred was ruining it by stealing his lines! Charlie clamped a hand over their mouths and grinned at Bill while George laughed with glee.

Molly's heart glowed as she watched her boys, each so different and wonderful in their own way. The thought that any one could hurt them filled her with anger, making her sick to the stomach. One vicious thought flashed through her mind; she'd kill anyone who tries.

Ron squirmed in her arms, as her grip had tightened; her vicious thoughts evaporated as she quickly soothed him, cuddling him close. No matter what, her children make everything worthwhile. Her children are more important than her morals. And, she vowed, silently as she does at each of their births and everyday, she would protect them.

So, as she stumbles to his body, already too terrifyingly cold, one of the many thoughts that fill her up is that she had failed... terribly.
