*Prologue: The Meteor*
This is our story, how we all began. Out in sunlight we are human, normal in every way. But at night, we come out to play, never normal, never sleeping. But we are also imprisoned, held back from the world as freaks of nature. We will never be free from this deformity, but we also want to live with it.
There are others like us, and together we come. Together we are strong.
Together, we are the Guardians.
"That day was a dark day.
Sure, it started all nice and sunny.
But then it got grim . . . very grim.
I can still see those flashing red lights . . .
The terrible burning in my body . . .
The absolute pain. . .
I can still hear the screaming . . . my mother's cries as she wept over my burnt body.
I can even remember seeing that bright light, the darkened sky . . . and the roar of the meteor, as it collided into the earth . . .
Now, everything is black.
I can sometimes hear people . . . talking to me. Calling my name.
There are other people in the same condition around me.
But, that's not the worst.
I can feel . . . this tingling through my fingers.
I can remember the impact of the meteor, powerful shock waves racing through me. I remember the tingle, the zing that rushed through every fumble of my being.
I was the closest, I think.
I took the most damage.
But I'm still alive.
I don't know why . . . but the only thing I can do is thank God I am still here . . ."
The doctors rushed back and forth, shouting and hollering to one another.
People, burnt to a crisp, were rushed into the hospital.
Some of them were still, but breathing.
Others were twitching uncontrollably.
Doctors think that the meteor's toxic energy entered into their bodies.
They just hoped that it wouldn't leave any permanent damage.
Sadly, their hope was in vain . . .
