Vampire Hunter D, the characters, names, situations and all legal and intellectual rights belong to Mr. Hideyuki Kikuchi and any legal entities he has granted rights to. I own nothing pertaining to Vampire Hunter D, except for a deep appreciation and quirky affection for the characters and the world Mr. Kikuchi created for them.

Struggle

It was a struggle. It always was for him. He supposed it was to be expected, given his nature, that his life would be consumed by effort, and struggle. He was used to it and so it had become an unremarkable background fact of his existence. How long this struggle would go on -- who knew? He certainly didn't.

Occasionally, things would go his way. Even if just for a short slice of time, his need to struggle would ease. It seemed as though today would be one of those days, almost like a gift from the universe, when everything would just fall into place with very little effort on his part.

He'd made good ground last night. He felt as though he had enough energy to push on further, and get even closer to his goal. And, the one thing that could slow him down, the need for sustenance, looked as if it might be supplied -- just like that -- in this gifted day... There was a something -- appealing -- squirming in the water just ahead.

"Good catch, D!" Left Hand called out happily. "It's gonna be carp for breakfast!"

"Poor thing. Its need to struggle is over," D murmured, releasing the fish from the hook that had snared it.
